ruining the local scenes
 

I've been wondering if anyother of you have the same problems as the local music scene in small town Kansas.

About a year and a half ago some guys opened up a coffeehouse (which isn't really a coffeehouse cause the only thing you can get there is water that looks like tea) where local bands and small touring bands can play. When the place opened it was really nice and clean.

Two months later there's not ceiling left, the walls are dotted with holes where people have punched and kicked. The place was just trashed after two months. They got a "staff" of local kids to work there for free and try to keep the place up. It worked for a while.

The problem is after a year of strong and steady buisness they're closing. Not because of financial problems.. because the kids that come tear the place apart. They said they're closing because the kids are too violent and they don't respect the music. The people in the town now seem to think that kids only want to go to concerts to beat the crap out of eachother and things. The scenesters are ruining the local music scene because they wanna look like a tough guy in front of their girlfriends.

It makes me really mad because that place is like a home away from home to me. The regulars are the nicest people I've met, but it's all ruined now thanks to people that don't care about the music. Now I have to drive 50 miles to the next town to see any kind of band play.

So does anyone else have too many anarchy-wanna-be's in their local music scene? It makes me really mad.

The local scene here sucks, But i grew up in buffalo, I think that was the best ever. One word describes it all...RESPECT. everyone respects eachother and their music no matter what style. There is niothing like it. Thats why all the good bands are from Buffalo ;)

A couple of years ago I was really into the underground scene over here. There were hundreds of bands making some really cool music, and everyone got on really, really well with one another. Then, one or two bands started signing for indie labels and putting records out, and all of a sudden everything changed. All the bands started talking behind each others backs, and a couple of them even exchanged blows.

As a result certain bars and clubs stopped booking certain bands, and everything split up into little factions and they'd always turn up at other bands' shows to heckle and cause trouble, and there were one or two fights at shows, which, when they're between two puny indie boys with bad haircuts, is well worth watching, and eventually the scene imploded.

There's some god bands play locally now though, and we are fortunate enough to have a decent number of venues in the local area.

Our Underground scene is just that....Underground. We haven't had much trouble with it, it's all in this one clubs basement our at the beach on the boardwalk. Regardless, some good bands. It's pretty good.

We have a pretty good local scene in the western part of Pennsylvania, around Pittsburgh and Johnstown areas. We've had tons of touring bands from across the country to play in the small town venues. Some of the top of my head include: Remembering Never, Spitalfield, Mae, The beltones, Alexisonfire, Whatever it takes, The Spotlight Syndicate, The A.K.A's....etc. However, there are a couple venues that have shut down over the past couple of years. In the smaller towns it was the noise complaints, in and around the larger cities such as pittsburgh it was the finances.

We are currently trying to open our own venue in this area, eventhough it's one of the smaller towns. We have the floor plans down, and contractors talking with some of the older people of the local scene. We're holding a couple benifit shows to help fund for this new venue. If you have the right people and a hard working local scene, you can do alot.

So...If you are struggling to find a venue, ask around in your area, get some people together and talk about possible venues, or take the puddle dive and start your own. It helps if you have a pretty decent size local scene with older adults for legal reasons. If you put the time and effort into it, its worth it. And of course it will grow over time.

well, I'm into my HxC scene and like every scene everywhere we have scene ***s (posers you could say but they like the music but they are into the look more than anything). Only thing thats a big problem in the DC area is clubs are cutting down on slam and hardcore dancing...bad times...

theres a good scene in melbourne. theres the actual scene, which has the poppy and the hard core. the metal heads go to these to act tough. seeing as im mates with them its funny. they dont beat anyone they just humiliate them. like when the jocks walk in thinking theyll be the cool guys there too. jocks dont come anymore. then theres the underground scene. this is the best scene iv seen in australia. sydney ha a fairly good scene, queenslands is fairly ****. adelaid hasnt got one and i havnt been to perth for years. but the melbourne scene is huge. melbourne is a large city, theres a ****load of different towns-for want of a better word. everybody goes for the music, and are friends as a result. check out a map of melbourne, around the whole bay theres a good scene for punk. then theres the hardcore scene. as expected theres a lot of people trying to act cool in these gigs, but they arent bad guys. all up the melbourne scene is fairly healthy.

MOsh pits should be just the right mix of aggressive and uhm, not killing people....hehe. If i'm in the pit i wanna slam, helicopter, jump into people, but leave the place intact though....

I used to be all into the pits and surfing, but its lame to me now, those kids always hit me and all I wanna do is watch the band i came to see. If I wanted to get kicked in the head and slam into people I would have played football.

Thats why you stay out of them, its not like they get really big. You can stand anywhere. The pits are never up front so just move. Come on dude.

...yeah but the people that start em are ususally right next to me...and I have been to concerts where the pits were up front...I know i sound like a pussy, but I used to do it too, but its different now, now I just want to enjoy the music.

I'm with you Thrice. I used to be a pit monkey myself, but when I met my girlfriend she wanted to come along with me, now she was only 5'2 and a strong wind could knock her down, so I couldn't exactly leave her where the elbows were flying, it's not fair on her. So we used to stand near the front where she could see the band, and drool over them no doubt, and it's tough to enjoy a gig when some idiot smacks you in the back of the neck every two minutes.

Yeah...I was at Warped watching a band that was not worth moshing over and the drunk frat boys had to be *******s and mosh in front and **** with everyone that wasnt doing it...it was just lame.

i hate going to gigs and all the old bogans start a pit. you know the type, the 30 yr old skinheads that would have been into grunge ten years ago. they leave their wives and kids at home to act tough in front of the younger people. the lowest of those guys even try to pick up with girls 15yrs younger than them. i once saw a guy take off his wedding ring, give it to his mate and go to try and chat up somebody younger than me. how low can they get?

One gig I was at with my ex there was a drunk guy who kept trying to grab my girlfriend's butt. Now, she hated violence, and kept telling me to leave it, thinking that he would eventually get bored. Instead, he kept turning round to his friends and telling them what a great ass the blond chick had, so I saw red, turned around and floored him. Next thing I knew two security guys dived on top of me, and were about to kick us out until a couple of guys who had seen the whole thing told them the full story.

The guy was out cold though, I rule.
