Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
So I got it from a friend today and decided to compare them to the originals. Some of them I dont have (adolescents, goverment issue, tsol) 'cause I never really got into them, but I had the rest.
Playlist: •Taking Back Sunday - The Descendents' "Suburban Home"/"I Like Food" •Senses Fail - Suicidal Tendencies' "Institutionalized" •Alkaline Trio - TSOL's "Wash Away"/"Beneath the Shadows" •Emanuel - The Stooges' "Search and Destroy" •Fall Out Boy - The Gorilla Biscuits' "Start Today" •Thursday - The Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love?" •From Autumn to Ashes - Fear's "Let's Have a War" •Hot Snakes - Government Issue's "Time to Escape" •Thrice - Minor Threat's "Seeing Red"/"Screaming at a Wall" •Saves the Day - The Dead Boys' "Sonic Reducer" •My Chemical Romance - The Misfits' "Astro Zombies" •Rise Against - Black Flag's "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie"/"Fix Me" •Dropkick Murphys - The Adolescents' "Who Is Who" •The Bled - Bad Brains' "House of Suffering" Saves The Day "Sonic Reducer" originally by the Dead Boys - Wasn't really that different, with the exception of the vocals and recording quality. It was still a really good pop-punk song. 4/5 Fall Out Boy "Start Today" originally by Gorilla Biscuits - Really similar, the vocals were a bit different. I don't like it as much as the gorilla biscuits one only cause fall out boy has an annoying vocalist, but it wasn't a bad cover or really that different at all. 2/5 My Chemical Romance "Astro Zombies" originally by the Misfits - Instrumentally pretty much the same, the guitars sound was different. Gerards voice was pretty decent actually, it got kind of..gritty? I don't know what the word would be, but it worked for the song. 3/5 Emanuel "Search and Destroy" originally by Iggy Pop & The Stooges - It was a little bit faster, but the original was dirtier. The vocals weren't really that different, it was pretty much the same song actually. 4/5 The Bled "House Of Suffering" originally by Bad Brains - The vocals weren't super different, they pretty much sound the same instrumentally the bleds is a little bit cleaner though. 4/5 Rise Against "Fix Me" originally by Black Flag - I liked it better then the original cause the vocals were way better, also the instruments were a bit more..hard sounding I suppose. 4/5 Senses Fail "Institutionalized" originally by the Suicidal Tendancies - To be honest I don't see a point in bothering with this, it was basically the same song. Taking Back Sunday "Suburban Home" originally by the Descendents - Instrumentally, only the tone/sound/etc was different. The vocals were probaly the most different from the original out of the album, i'm not to big on TBS anymore and the vocalist has been bugging me so it got annoying, but still pretty much the same thing. 2/5 From Autumn To Ashes "Lets Have a War" originally by Fear - The sound was barely different, the vocals were more a bit more tolerable. Aint much of a difference really. 3/5 Thrice "Seeing Red/Screaming At A Wall" originally by Minor Threat - Once again barely any different musically, I prefer Thrices vocalist over Ian Mackaye. So I liked it better 4/5 Thursday "Ever Fallen In Love" originally by the Buzzcocks - The vocals are different, thats it. Its the same song like pretty much the rest of the album. I prefer the Thursday version though. 4/5 OMG! *waits to get flamed* The albums a waste of money, don't buy it, its pretty much just the original songs done over with no difference. I found it kind of funny everyone was freaking out and being all "how dare they butcher the songs!" when really they didn't do anything different. So you know, you can tear this apart and tell me how i'm wrong 'cause im interested to hear what everyones so pist about. |

Shouldn't you turn this into the album reviews forum?
Half of these covers aren't any good, but Thursday's cover is epic. 3/5 for me.

Not really much variety there.
If i was to buy an album like that i`d want a more diverse selection of bands. Something like say a rapper doing Black Flag , a lounge singer doing The Buzzcocks , some weird techno artist doing The Dead Boys. Stuff like that.

It's not as bad as one might think, nay, what Casualties fans make it out to be. Most of the songs have a very similar sound to the originals, but they in no way improve and add anything new to these songs. My guess if the bands were told not to fuck it up and make covers similar to the originals. Oh well, the Rise Against cover wasn't half bad.
