I think the rumor was that Bend Sinister was mastered at a speed a tad slower than was intended - that's part of what gave it that slow gothic vibe, I think. I don't remember if it was intentional or not. I wouldn't take MES's autobio too seriously though, as I think it was ghostwritten. I do remember enjoying it though.

But regardless, I'd take Bend Sinister over either Joy Division record.

Gross Chapel - British Grenadiers is their best tune to me - at least right next to Hexen Def. - Strife Knot. I think objectively PBL is probably a better album, but a gun to my head, I can only choose one Fall record, I'm taking Bend Sinister (with the caveat that it's the American version closed out by "Auto Tech Pilot", one of their most underrated songs, and the perfect closing song to that record).
