And here's one of their most overlooked tracks - for my money, a beautiful song.



And their most criminally underrated album - Levitate - comes one of their all time strongest tracks, "Ol' Gang". Just don't think the world was ready for this album - the song is like a periscope view into madness and a band quickly disintegrating:

'Bend Sinister' is my favorite Fall album - it's got a sense of tension and suspense that none of their other albums have. Granted, it doesn't have the anger and bile that is a dominant trait of many of their other albums, but it hangs together as an album incredibly well. My only disappointment with the album is that 'Auto Tech Pilot' was left off of the original release. It's the perfect closing track for the album.

Their worst album? Tough call, but I've never had much love for 'Are You Are Missing Winner'. Unlike some people, I'm quite fond of most of their '90s releases.

Generally elph, I'd agree with you. But honestly when I think about it, my two favorite Fall songs are both slower numbers ("Gross Chapel - British Grenadiers" and "Hexen Def. Strife Knot"). The tendency is that most Fall songs are not slow so in totality, they definitely have a lot more quality fast songs.

I'm guessing you're not a big fan of their '90s stuff (Code Selfish, Shiftwork, Middle Class Revolt, etc.)? I think your description fits most of their late-70s to mid-80s output well, but their sound evolved a lot over the years. I can see kinda where you're going with the Joy Division comparison in regards to Bend Sinister, but even then, there were songs on there like Dr. Faustus, Shoulder Pads, Bournemouth Runner, and Mr. Pharmacist that would never appear on a Joy Divison LP (they're not bleak enough - way too peppy).

Oh trust me, I've listened quite a few times and I'm not sleeping on it. But your comment did give me pause and I'd like to retract my assertion that I think it's their worst album. I'd actually have to give that honor to Reformation Post TLC. An album with a few gems but also jam-packed with half-baked ideas. AYAMW would probably be my runner-up for worst album (it would rank higher without Afro-Ibis Man) and Cerebral Caustic would probably be the third worst.

Out of curiosity, what is your favorite '90s Fall album? (I promise, you tell me yours, and I'll tell you mine).

Honestly though, and perhaps you and I could discuss this in more depth, but I really think the Fall's '90s albums are better than their '00s albums. Their best '00s album, in my opinion, was Fall Heads Roll (this is of course, debatable) - but their body of work in the '90s was so different and varied that I don't think I could ever think their '00s work was better as a whole. Real New Fall LP and Imperial Wax Solvent and Fall Heads Roll? Great albums. But up against the likes of Code Selfish, Middle Class Revolt, Infotainment Scan, Levitate and The Marhsall Suite? I'll take their '90s output every time.

Since you guys were telling me about these guys, I decided to check out Live at the Witch Trials. I know it's not necessarily the best decision in every occasion to start with a band's debut, but I couldn't resist with a title as great as that from such an appealing year (1979). And besides, getting a basis on what sound a band was founded on is always a good way of understanding their later efforts, if one chooses to venture them out as well.

Overall the music was quite good--compelling bass lines and drums working together nicely, good angular guitar, et cetera et cetera. "Frightened," "Music Scene," "Rebellious Jukebox," "Mother-Sister," "Futures and Pasts," "Two Steps Back," and the title monologue were my favorite tracks. Nice sound.

My biggest complaint, however is pretty unavoidable: Mark's voice. I know I'm going to sound like a prick for this, but British accents can be pretty grating to my ears for whatever reason, hence why Mark's vocals somewhat turned me off here. But that's just me. -_-

His vocals are one of the main attractions to me, and to many other fall fans too I'm pretty sure, so if it's not your thing I guess it isn't easy for you to get into the Fall. Oh well. If you liked them well enough to look further then that's worth it though; their sound varied quite a lot over the years. Definitely not a hear-one-album-and-you've-heard-it-all-band
