Well, jethro tull did help start punk rock.......Seriously, punk was born on its hatred for prog.

Merkaba 11-12-2005 05:28 PM

Damn it all, theres nothing to hate about prog, although back then it could have because prog was stealing rock n rolls thunder, slightly.

Well, being a fan of both genres, i have always been puzzled myself, but i think i have come to understand why punk bands seem to despise prog so much.

1.The "rock" in prog rock is a very loose term, because prog is about as far from "rock n roll" as any of its subgenres. And because punk was founded from rock n roll enthusiasts, they blamed prog for trying to make rock music "mature" and "adult", which is what rock n roll originaly stood against.

2.Well lets face it, not everyone can sit through a 20 minute Kieth Emerson keyboard suite based on the compositions of Bach, a album length Ian Anderson epic about religion and politics or a super complex guitar/violin exchange between Robert Fripp and David Cross...Being a prog fan requires patience, some people just dont have it.

3.Prog treated music as a form of art, punks considered entertainment their form of art.

4.Some prog was weird for the sake of being weird, because of this, punks and critics alike began labeling prog as Pretentious, Pompous and Shameless Self Indulgence...The later term is a little hypocritical, because a lot of punk is just as shameless and self indulgent as prog.

5.Some people really REALLY hate synthisizers.

Punk and Prog have been at war since the 70s, the punk movement nearly killed prog...Bands like Yes, ELP and King Crimson went from big arenas to smaller venues, their songs were no longer played on the radio and they were replaced by The Ramones, The Clash and The Sex Pistols, even to this day some people consider prog dead and punk responsible, and some people in the media such as rolling stone and blender think of that as a good thing.

But this one misunderstood fact is that dispite their differences, a lot of prog and punk shared the same themes and principles. Bands like The Sex Pistols and The Clash sang about not obeying authority and they sang about their hate for politics and religion, and you know what?, so did Jethro Tull and King Crimson, The Ramones sang about alienated youth, and so did Yes...The themes were the same, it was just the approach that was radicaly different.

Merkaba 11-12-2005 07:08 PM

Shabang, you should write a book boo boo that was well said.

In agreeance, the messages were similar. That was one of the whole themes of rock, rebellion, and when punk first came about it was still running strong in the blood so to speak. And so as said above, Punk artists hated the way prog artists were dillying about with sounds, stretching the all important themes of many of the songs. Thats why punk is short and sweet.

Punk has the scales 70:30 in favour of the message.
Prog has the scales 70:30 in favour of the music.

At least thats how I see it.

True, but i still dont understand why people hate prog for being long, classical music and opera is long, isnt it?...I love prog, and i think people take the rock in prog rock too seriously, prog just has some rock elements, but it borrows much more from other genres, mainly jazz and classical music, and theres nothing wrong with that.

I also like how some bands nowedays mix elements of punk AND prog.

Its a place for people to have discussions about a specific topic, basicly.... Music Banter is a forum, with several sub-forums like the punk forum. I think we should have a prog forum, because jethro tull on the punk forum just dosent seem right. :D

Laces Out Dan! 11-12-2005 08:27 PM

Ok roger that....and yes a prog forum should be made

sleepy jack 11-12-2005 08:30 PM

No it shouldn't you prog fan boys.
Honestly most of the genre with their own sections have tons of bands.
Prog is small small small compared to others.

Laces Out Dan! 11-12-2005 08:33 PM

On the contrary, there are at least 1,985 artists listed in the prog archives, and many more, there are tons of great prog bands, they may not be popular, but they do exist...Sorry for being off topic, but thats the price you pay for naming this thread Jethro Tull. ;)

Anyway i should make a poll about the prog forum debate, its boo boo to the rescue, UP, UP AND AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!
