If you beleive Malcolm McLaren , Personally I think the guy was full of sh*t myself. They said they were in it for the money during the Grundy show long before McLaren came up with his whole 'Cash For Chaos' crap.

Crass meant something.
They were just singing about their surroundings & where they came from and the frustrations at the time. IE Run down tower blocks in north London , The 3 day week , 3 million unemployed with no prospects. I remember Steve Jones saying that he wasn`t in the Pistols because he wanted to be , he said he was in the Pistols because thats ALL he had.
Understand where they were coming from and you will see they were very much for real no matter how much Malcolm McLaren tries to take credit for otherwise.Like it or not if it wasn`t for the Pistols there would be no Crass.

Well put. I just find it hard to take Johnny Rotten seriously and not just as a cheap facade. As Malcolm McClaren said in a recent interview,

"His (Lydon) problem is that he could never escape Johnny Rotten because John Lydon was never interesting enough. Sad but true."

I cant deny the Pistols impact on music but I just felt quite cheated by their lyrics. I mean my favourite Pistols song was always Pretty Vacant and I heard it was created when Malcolm told Johnny to rewrite Blank Generation by Richard Hell.

More on topic, I do think that Richard Hell played a very important part in the birth of punk.

Wouldn`t disagree with that Lydon has been living off past glories since the early 80s.
I just think that McLaren is even worse for it.

um, Sid vicious couldn't play. his amp was turned off during performances and the guitarist actually played bass and guitar on the recordings. sid was a model for punk, not a musican.

Ramones are better. But they still weren't that good. Too poppy. The Sex Pistols were just plain aceholes. Plus they got back together a few years ago for money. That sucks. The Clash own both.

Real band? Really? That poppy stuff was real music? I think they were both entertainment shows. Especially considering music is entertainment...but, y'know, whatever. The Clash ownzor both.

The ramones were brilliant, influenced so many bands. Not only there dead simple style with using like 2 chords per song but there agressive singing style was great, my room is covered in ramones shizzle. But im english so GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!...
