A strange thought I have had about this is, is that American music is generally positive and is optimistic. British music is generally pessimistic and nihilistic. This applies across the board and a thread is now gestating...

I think you may be right about that.
I think that's one of the reasons Oasis stood out so much when they were first around. Every song on that debut album was optimistic.

Seriously
They're all about going out & living life to the full. Live Forever , Cigarettes & alcohol , Rock n Roll Star , Digsy's Dinner , Up In the Sky , Slide Away , Shakermaker ... all about that About the only down song on that whole album is Married With Children.

The reason I quoted you was that you quoted optimism in English music which left me nonplussed!

I think it's a lot like the sarcastic sort of humour that seems to be mainly exclusive to Brits and gets lost on a lot of other countries. Just like that we're not really afraid to complain and be moody sods either, whereas music from other countries tends to be more upbeat.

Gonna go with the Pistols, simply because their sole album proper stands on it's own, untainted by a decades-long career of self-parody like the Ramones. If the Ramones had quit after Road to Ruin it'd be almost even stevens

I think this is a massive overgeneralization and isn't really true at all. Take a wider range of artists and you find the Americans turn out just as pessimistic and depressive as us moody gits. Conversely there's been plenty of British music geared towards optimism and a positive message. I think you're focussing on specific movements?

I have to disagree on that. NMTB is a lot of fun, once you start hearing the humor. On the other hand, even if you take it straight, I think it achieves the White Light/White Heat trick of taking ugliness and making it...attractive, even beautiful, by virtue of expressing it so perfectly. Nothing against the Ramones, who I think are one of the better New York bands from that time, but they have nothing on the Pistols. |
