Lydon had the right idea. PIL were better thought of and rightly so.

Lydon's replacement? I thought Ronnie Biggs was just a train robber who Malcom wanted to be involved with "The Great Rock N' Roll Swindle" just for the publicity; I never heard anything about him replacing Lydon as the lead singer. Where'd you hear that?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but Lydon was aware of the band wanting to go to Brazil to make the movie right before the band broke up and thought it was a bad idea; he was still trying to sort things out when he came back to the hotel and found out they had already left.

He was aware of them going there , but the plan at that time was for the band just to meet up with Biggs because of his noteriety.
When Lydon left McLaren came upon the idea of having Biggs sing with the band and announced him as Lydon's replacement to drum up maximum publicity.

Well I think that all amounts to Malcolm McLaren being a giant ****head, and I still don't see how this would change anyone's opinion on Rotten or the Pistols themselves, especially when what you're saying happened post-breakup. I think that the deceitfulness associated with the band is due to Malcolm and the truth and creativity due to Rotten, so it might be hard to distinguish at times but I don't think Malcolm's so-called influence on the band should change anyone's minds about Rotten or the band itself when they had such a positive influence on the scene at the time and for future generations.

Let's refocus for a second to what Punk Rock tried to do in the mid 70's...essentially blowup the elitist AOR rock culture which began with Sgt. Pepper. As concept albums became more ambitious and complex, groups became more pompous and out of touch with audiences. Groups were using orchestras, over-dubs, session players, making their music very inaccessible to the up and coming garage bands. So along comes punk, erasing the Classic Rock era, and rewinding music to the late 50's...and era when rock was basic, artists didn't have to record 10 songs for and album and when the vast majority of people bought single 45's, not long playing 33 and a thirds. It was no coincidence that "God Save the Queen", "Pretty Vacant", "Anarchy in the UK", could only be purchased as 45's upon their initial release. Not only did these singles absolutely rock harder than anything since "Live at Leeds", they were also the Pistols attempt to subvert the music industry which pushed "singles" to sell more expensive and more profitable albums. Later the singles were compiled for "Never Mind the Bullocks", and as a result, it sounds like a bunch of singles, not a perfectly selected sequence of tunes, which on the other hand, is exactly the way "Rocket to Russia" plays, making the Ramones much more similar to Classic Rock than the Pistols. This was a profound difference between the two bands...one was a singles bands, the other AOR and AOR ladies and gentlemen, is not punk.
