actually come to think about it, most early punk bands didnt ever showcase a lot of "technical" talent. Much of early punk music (as much of it is toady) was based on the "feel" of the music rather than coming up with a clean, and "well put together" sound. So saying that the pistols were a lesser band because they didnt showcase a lot of technical ability isn't really a fair point, seeing as how that wasnt at all the focus in punk music at the time.

Pistols
The Sex Pistols were flat out one of the greatest rock n roll bands ever (I'm talking pre-Vicious). Awesome rhythm and guitar, but what put them over was Johnny Rotten. They guy just had attitude out the ying-yang and ripped everone in site...and was pretty funny too. The Ramones were boring, kinda like Sha Na Na.

And Malcom Laclaren may have been manipulative, but he never stopped Rotten or the boys from coming up with their own ideas or making them change their image just to make money so he really had no effect on them artistically-speaking either way. |

I have the opinion that neither the Sex Pistols or the Ramones are punk. The reason I say this, is that the Ramones were not even classed as a punk band by British punks at the time the Pistols were doing their thing, that came later. And as the scene grew in England (which is ironic because punk was deemed dead by the music press after the Pistols ended) the Sex Pistols were looked down on by 'real punks', after McClaren was seen for what he was...a manipulator out for a quick killing. |
