I completely agree that they are a vey inspirational band, as far as punk is concerned, it is the "new punk" and I know that sounds stupid...but they are the origionals of something. They are he origionals that Blink 182, Good Charlotte and Sum 41 follow. Now I like songs by all of those bands but that does not nearly make them my faves!
But green Day has been around since the late 80's and you gotta give 'em credit for that.

Green Day original? Hahaha. Try The Buzzc*cks, The Clash, The Damned, The Ramones, and The Descendents. Same three-chord style.
That's "new" punk? Hahaha.

it's only 'new punk' because that's what the little kids who watch MTV all day are told.

Yeah, but its still the 'new punk'. Im not sayin I agree with it, but it is.. I dont think that they're a 'very inspirational band' though. How anyone can be inspired by green day is beyond me.

I've heard Billie Joe himself say that his band isn't a voice for punk, nor does he want it to be. However, they are a form of punk. They might not sound anything like the Exploited, etc, but look at the Ramones. They were pretty damn poppy and were a mainstream band also. Green Day is more like that form. I know that being mainstream automaticly means you aren't punk, but it's more about the mindset then the music. They guys in the band know what punk is and they admit that their music isn't as punk as most bands but they still have the punk attitude. It's not like they were put together by a record lable to appeal to 12 year old girls or pretend to be punk like GC or Simple Plan. Green Day IS punk, get over it.

Oh yeah, for those of you that don't know this, Billie Joe is Tim Armstrong's cousin. Before Lars joined Rancid, Billie was the second guitarist. Tim wanted to see if a second guitarist would work so Tim asked Billie to do it. He almost became part of Rancid.

"A guy walked up to me the other day and asked me, "What's punk?" So I kick over a garbage can and say, "That's punk!" So he kicks over a garbage can and asks, "That's punk?" And I say, "NO, that's trendy!" - Billie Joe Armstrong
I love that quote.

After that line I stopped reading your post. That is the stupidest thing anyone can say. Just because a band makes music that a LOT of people like does NOT mean they can't be considered a certian genre any more. It's about the music, not who likes the music. Also, The Ramones were mainstream, if you didn't already know that.

Well maybe you should have read the rest because right after that I said that the Ramones were mainstream. And when I said mainstream I meant when a band gets on radio and MTV, not that they become popular. You should really read entire posts becuase you are missing half of the point people are putting across.
