Default Do You Consider Green Day A Punk Band?

I have a friend who thinks Green Day was never actually punk, that they were more pop than punk.

I disagree with him, I believe that Green Day's first few albums were very punk, and weren't pop at all. I think Dookie is a little more pop punk than punk, but I still think that Green Day was punk back in the day. (Now they aren't really punk at all)

I was wondering what your thoughts are about Green Day relating to punk music.

Thanks!

You can go back to Dookie, or back to 39/Smooth, they were always pop punk imo.

Why does having a pop influence mean you can't be a punk band? The Ramones, The Clash, Buzzcocks?

Green Day is pop punk. They've always leaned more heavily on pop than punk. That's not a bad thing, it's just a musical choice. That's why they're popular. Because they use verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus-chorus.

Iggy Pop is punk. The Clash are punk. The Misfits are punk. Bad Brains are punk. They all have attitude, and were going against the grain. But Green Day? Pop punk. They have always tried to sound poppy, and any attempt they've ever made to be "edgy" has failed completely.

Pop punk is still punk, so Green Day were punk, but they were cutting it fine even back then in my opinion. I'm not really sure what the OP means by "very punk" but I certainly wouldn't say they were..

I would say that Green Day are a piss poor rock band who use piss poor elements of pop and piss poor elements of punk to sound even more piss poor.

Instead of arguing about what genre Green Day are try doing something more rewarding with your time, like seeing how many times you can tap your finger on something before you get a cramp in it, or making a collection of toenail clippings and sorting them out by date.

Or, you could take the clippings and put them in a packet of shredded mozzarella cheese (obviously you must be living with other people for this to work). Now you play the waiting game.
