Nirvana has better melodies I would say, although I don't really think you could class them as melodies. I dislike Green Day as a band but I have to admit they have made some great melodies in the past. I had the Time of Your Life melody stuck in my head just by other people singing it.

Both write simple melodies, but for me, Billie Joes melodies can get awfully repetitive, of course Nirvana were pretty repetitive, but i think Green Day were more so, songs like Longview and Jinx are great, but they dont put the same spell on me that Something In The Way and Aneurysm have, plus Nirvana went out in their prime, i personally think Green Day's music has been going downhill since 1997, Nimrod was their last above average effort, Warning had its moments and they certainly deserve respect for trying something different, the end result however just wasnt too satisfying... And American Idiot never appealed to me, i especially never liked the title song, in fact when i first heard it i thought it was one of their older songs, like i have heard it many times before...Sure, Nirvana were never a super diverse band, and neither were Green Day, and the fact that Green Day have lasted longer makes their music more tiring, American Idiot may be new for them in a way because it's a concept album, but musically, its not that different from old Green Day, its just not as good...I think Nirvana could have made at least 2 or 3 good albums after In Utero, and it would be interesting to hear what kind of songs Cobain would write today based on whats going on in the world and in pop culture, i think they could have gotten even better, because every album they made was a improvement over the last, Green Day are the other way around for me, their old stuff was great, their new stuff is decent, its just nothing i would get excited about.

Meh, thats just me though.

green day, too overrated. billy joe isn't THAT much of an awesome songwriter. and American Idiot definatly wasn't as good as the media made it out to be.

They did not go out in their prime. If you remember correctly, Nirvana was on the slippery slide to mediocrity when Cobain lost his brains to a shotty. No one will admit that now, though, since Cobain's death immediately made him a rock genius and martyr. Nirvana would be a joke, in my opinion, if they were still around.

My ex used to say that exact thing all the time..and I plead the fifth on the subject of rather or not..

Getting back on title..

I like Green Day..its a memory thing..they were not huge where I lived during my Junior High Days..but my group of uncool, cool kids digged them..and so I have a strong tie to them in my memory..Dookie is the best album yet..and the last one wasnt bad..but musically..they are redundant...easily copied...and or covered...but I still listen to them..

Simply catchy. I dig Green Day in small amounts. Infact, probably the best pop band of the 90s.
