Im not a fan of GD, nor do i own any of their albums, but I have to admit that back in the day, they used to play alot of shows with Filth and The Blatz. So, I give them some credit for that. But thats about where it ends for me.

don't think that greenday is punk (don't think that they are really trying to be, though)...but it is kinda weird, i think that i read somewhere on this website that they played a concert with simple plan...i lost respect for green day after that...nobody with a working mind and at least one nut in his sack should play with those corporate-created, image-rocking, bottom-feeding, metrosexual, prostate sucking, Oedipus Complex, poser bastards.

^i dont really hold anything against green day for guilty by association. but i think they do consider themselves punk (maybe simple plan does too, creepy i know); obviously some of their fans do. i dunno i think their last three albums were just cheesy and teen angst sing along duck duck goose kinda sh*t. and for these people to call them political punk now, thats what i hate.

there isnt a big gaping difference between their oldest stuff and their newest stuff, although i totally agree that their first cd (1039 smoothed out slappy hours) is their best - i hope you were talking about this cd and not dookie, which is the one a lot of people think is their first. but greenday has always been poprock and melodic, and theyve always had a poppunk influence in their sound throughout their discography. besides the sh*tty recording quality, i see no reason why someone who likes green day's new stuff would hate their oldest sh*t.
