I don't think it's that, because that is a pretty ridiculous thing to say. The band evolved much in the 70s, every album was different and their sound was entirely their own.

No, it's that they turned into a prog band, with a more polished sound, lyrics that actually had some kind of comprehensable meaning and a guitarist whose idea of a solo wasn't just making weird noises at random.

I still like Syd era Floyd. But Piper is only like..... my 8th favorite Floyd album.
