The Genesis 2018 Discussion Thread
Sure, there's probably been one made before, but I'll be damned if I'm going to heave myself up out of my comfy chair and go searching for it. If there is one, and any mod wishes to merge this with it, knock yourself out.
Any further discussion which was to take place about Genesis in the "Release Me" thread should be brought here. Anyone else who just wants to talk about the band, this is where to do it. |
Their worst two records were their debut and finale.

I'm definitely more in the 70s camp though, not just Gabriel but pretty much anything with Hackett on board. |
Gabriel > Collins

I kind of find it odd that Ant got into Genesis around 1980 (same as me) but through Duke, whereas I got into them via the Seconds Out live album and then went backwards to get all the stuff that was on that - Trick of the Tail, Lamb, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England etc. So we both got into them at around the same time, but he went forward and I went backwards (first anyway).

My favorite Genesis album is Trespass. Duke is my 2nd favorite. I just like quoting American Psycho whenever people bring up Collins because it's fun. :shycouch:
|
I've already stated my top albums in other threads, but yeah, Trespass is very high on that list. Duke, too.

Whenever Genesis would start drifting a bit to soft or maudlin Hackett would come in with a nasty stab to keep things hard. I only ever learned one Hackett solo note for note. The dude approached phrasing and runs like no-one else I've spent a lot of time with. Somehow he made really weird sounding **** fit perfectly into their songs. This is the one I learned. Yeah, when you consider he wasn't there for Trespass that becomes a harder claim to back up, but there's no doubt he kept them grounded when they looked like they were going to go full pop. It's no coincidence that the first time they really did this (allowing for the weirdly inappropriate success of "I Know What I Like" from Selling England: how did that ever become a hit?) was with And Then There Were Three, and that their most well-known song outside of prog rock is "Follow You Follow Me". Think Hackett would have stood for that?

I foresee that this thread shall be the genesis of many a pun. I'm collin(s) it right now, it's gonna be philled with them.
|
I've come to think that "And Then There Were Three" is actually pretty good.
Looks like I'm getting old. |

All right then, let's do this: post your top ten and bottom ten Genesis tracks. I'm working on mine at the moment (no surprise from which album many of the latter will be taken! :D) - Genesis band albums only, no solo ****. :)

No. 5 though? Seriously? and number 6? Your list of course, but wow: some there I would not have expected. Occult, all good choices so far. Let's do it your way actually, more fun than a list. No offence, Ant. Man! How do you cut down so much good music to ten tracks??? What idiot thought of tha - oh. :shycouch: |
Going with this one to start off.
Trollheart's Genesis Top Ten Tracks Number Ten "White Mountain" - Trespass (1970) |
Anything Now was a deplorable B-Side off a single from Calling All Stations. Ant’s just ****ing with you.
Occult Genesis Top Ten Number Five: Blood on the Rooftops |
Can't do a bottom ten because I stopped buying new stuff in the mid 80s.
Can't do a top ten either because for me it's all about the albums. Each of their best discs have a unique vibe both composition wise and production wise. They each their own atmosphere. A BEST OF album of 70s Genesis would sound so disjointed IMO. Picking top five albums is also impossible becasue they evolved so much from album to album. How do you put Foxtrot ahead of W&W or Lamb ahead of Selling England? My top fave albums in no order? That I can do. Foxtrot Selling England Lamb W&W Trick of the Tail Honorable mention: Side one of Duke. |

Yeah it's definitely hard. On another day, with more time, the whole ten would probably change.
Aaaaaaanyway.... Let's mix it up! Trollheart's Bottom Ten Genesis Tracks Number Ten "Another Record" - Abacab (1981) |
