I would give the match over to True Myth.
Very good prog with vocalist sounding exactly like Greg Lake. (Not to mention the lp has sound engineering history.)

Plastic Cloud is, of course, legendary psych lp but, other than the first track, it is fuzz-overkill and thus samey throughout.


So then,as much as I lurv psychedelic music, prog has won out - at least on my submissions.

If you can think up a match where psych clearly comes out the winner, please enlighten.

Yes - Tormato

YES Tormato is much-maligned by progheads for a few reasons:

some take certain lyrics (like the "Circus of Heaven" track) to be sickly-sweet

poor production


Wakeman insisting on using rinky-dink keys-sounds that get dated quickly. (I never understood the reasoning behind his obvious low-profiling of the Hammond.) Wakiepoos was pushing his fancy Biotron at that time and he had put money into it. That is likely the reason for that irritating high-pitch , low depth keys sound through much of Tormato.

All the same, there are excellent tracks here - "Dont Kill The Whale", "Release Release" is a good rocker. And one of their strongest lp endings.

I bought a dollar bin copy of it years ago and always thought it sounded like they were just phoning it in to fulfill a contract they were trying to get out of, whereas USA is a perfect record on every level.

United States like Silver Apples and - the best of the three - 50 Foot hose,
are terribly over-rated lps.

Simply because they were amongst the earliest to play with electronic effects, does not guarantee anything. Being the first entering an otherwise virgin field does not count for much in my book - other than serving as fodder to push "firsts" on music fora discussions.(Of which, admittedly, I myself am much guilty of.)

Way better on the early electronics-to-pop/rock front, were White Noise.

That's cool I guess, I don't really rate them based on that though. How much does brilliant music count for in your book?

I say that White Noise are as good as USA.

White Noise had two members who were grounded in electronics of the period - at one of the best learning grounds available in those thin early times: BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

United States on the other hand were just diddling around.

"On The Silent Wings of Freedom" on Tormato...now that IS brilliant.
