Occult rock 70s (NO METAL!)
Which lps have a strong occult/mystical influence permeating the music?
I don't mean bogus stuff that runs through a lot of heavy metal, but music by people who at least dabbled the life as occultists, or just "see" with "another eye". Some that spring to mind: Graham Bond - Holy Magick Boudwijn de Groot - Nacht e Ontij Exuma Jacula - Tardo Pede (soundtrack to seance, read somewhere that this had lots of occult stuff in it - maybe someone knows more) Jamra - Second Coming Black Widow (read this was the real deal - someone told me they could not sleep properly having one of their lps in the house) Wilburn Burchette - Guitar Grimoire and several others On the heavy progressive side there is of course Monument and Horse from the UK. Also Zior. Probably tons more from around the world that just escape me. Alex Sanders-"A Witch Is Born" (UK 1970 A&M label!) is an actual recording of a witch's initiation/consecration. |
Bobby Beausoleil's soundtrack to Kenneth Anger's "Lucifer Rising" comes to mind.

For sure.
Most of that was recorded in a prison??? Wot they got there? Prison studio and experimental music appreciation weekdays? Black Sabbath just milked it for a prop as did Alice Cooper guillotine etc antics. But Coven were more serious. I did not know this - cos you don't see it in his lyrics - but Bowie was really into this sham. He bought stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee's reputedly haunted mansion. (Haunted cos maybe she led a profligate lifestyle???). He felt Evil concentrated about the swimming pool. Bowie and wife then performed their own private exorcism. Even though the wifeypoos did not believe in it, she swears the water bubbled and a dark mass was seen to move over the bottom. |
What about 'Blood On The Snow' by Coven?

Only once, while listening to an album, I've felt the sudden, fervent desire of never coming back from it. In the early 70s, Walter Wegmüller, a gypsy mystic and a Tarot card diviner gathered some of the best German musicians of the era and recorded an other-wordly album: TAROT.

Maybe Lucifer's friend and Message - of Books and Dreams.

Looking forward to giving these a listen, I love ritual inspired old school jams. /¤ccult\
