I say that Hawkwind were *very* uneven. A few of their songs (e.g. Silver Machine, Lord of Light, Spirit of the Age) were great, some were meh and many were just boring masses of noise.

Uneven they are, but there are some great albums. My favourites are Hall of the Mountain Grill and Warrior on the Edge of Time. Quark, Strangeness and Charm and Levitation are also pleasant listens and some of their latest albums are quite enjoyable too.
