Buddy Baker was an ordinary guy
So when he got the letter he was horrified
But he said goodbye.

Filling all the forms and the papers he could see
But when he got his uniform he wished he could be with his family

Got into a plane and he vanished in the haze
His eyes were full of rain
And his ears were full of praise

Buddy lost an engine in the heat of the attack
He knew he couldn't do it but he tried to make it back
Then it all turned bad

For they saw him lying in the wreckage of the plane
Someone wrote a letter home attempting to explain it was not in vain.
Someone took particulars and someone brought a box
Making sure he looked nice for his folks, they changed his socks.

He's gone away
