the bookends - Pigs on the Wing

genuinely moving sincere song

SATCHMO 09-13-2012 10:10 AM

I generally don't look at Animals as a collection of songs, but rather as a suite. Each song generally seems like a movement of a larger score, especially considering how Pigs opens the piece and reprises itself at the end, giving the album symmetry and closure, but If I had to pick, I'd say Dogs, because I don't always make it through the whole album, but I always try to at least make it through that song.

For me it's "Pigs" - perfectly describes politicians and other people of the "high" class.

We should probably differentiate since there's 3 of the 5 tracks on the album are titled Pigs:

Pigs on the Wing 1

Pigs: (Three different ones)

Pigs on the Wing 2

My fault. I just have always ignored what is written in brackets in songs' names. Pigs (Three different ones), of course.
And, by the way, I totally liked your opinion about the album. It's a detailed description of every class of the society in a beautiful way. From the "pigs" to the "sheep", nobody remains unaffected.

"Pigs (Three Different Ones)" will always remind me of joining in with the Occupy protests earlier this year. Good times.

don't think it's that hard to differentiate

the second song is about sticking it to the Man

the first and third are about Waters' wife

No, as songs themselves they're not hard to differentiate at all, but as song titles they can be if one doesn't specify which Pigs they're talking about, it can get confusing.

Dogs... easy

I need to refresh my memory of the album, but IIRC I really liked Dogs.

Pigs (3 Different Ones)

mikeisapro 05-13-2014 11:12 PM

Dogs is good, no doubt,
but,
A little bit drawn out
to,
make the final cut.

I praise pigs prowess,
packs a pleasing political punch,
placating poor people with powerful punky punts.

Although I like all three
quite fairly equally
I feel I must concede
that it just might be Sheep.

On second thought, I have to go with Dogs. It is much more memorable; I can recall pretty much all of the guitar and lyrics despite not hearing it for several months. The only line I remember from Sheep is "bleating and babbling he fell on his neck with a scream. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream" which IS an awesome line....it echoes of the way Roger describes light in Echoes: "...and through the window in the wall, come streaming in on sun-lit wings, a million bright ambassadors of morning". Can't deny Roger Waters' lyrical talent!

But everyone knows Gilmour is the better musician (even though I like Roger Waters more) ;)

Animals is one of the few perfect albums to me. I guess I would go with Dogs over all.

Ana Kovacheva 05-31-2014 03:39 PM

a perfect album, I hesitate between Pigs and Dogs

The Ascension 06-09-2014 11:43 PM

Every song is tremendous, but I'd have to go with Dogs. It is just an epic masterpiece of rock both musically and lyrically.

Would probably put Pigs (Three Different Ones) second, the the version of Pigs on the Wing with the Snowy White guitar solo bridging the two parts together might be better.

I think this is Gilmour's best work on the guitar (HM to Meddle), and Roger Waters' voice is better than it usually is here, too, IMO. The Wall means a lot to me personally, but I think this is Pink Floyd's best album, objectively.

Dogs. The guitar tone is amazing for his leads. He used a splitter and went out to two amps, one witu a rotating speaker. I think it was a tele with a gibson humbucker for the neck pickup. Anyway, delicious licks, and even the opening rhythm is really quite unique.
