The first album is an oddity in that its their only pure hard rock release of the 1970s and it's really just an average album, their second Fly By Night is an improvement over it and the best of their very early period. Caress of Steel despite the great name and its metal sounding name is a load of toss! 2112 though is a genuine epic and from there the band legend started to be born. This is just my opinion of course, but then again these forums are built on opinions.
