For my money "Live" is the best. Since it is not listed, I chose Lamb...

I have to say Invisible touch. Know that is "wrong". Invisible touch is pop and the best Genesis is prog. But I've never really enjoyed early Genesis prog. And the pure quality of the songs on Invisible touch is almost masterclass.
So I pick the wrong album. :D |
A bit of a toss up between Selling England and Foxtrot, with the former narrowly winning in my eyes. Selling England has the perfect balance between short, fun songs and longer prog workouts to really give an effective balance. Also the loose concept around works subtely but yet in a pleasant poetic nature.
It also has the best song on vocals that old Phil ever did! (More Fool Me for those who don't know) |

Duke is their best work, imo. It was the midway point between their pop music and their progressive rock. It's very interesting to hear synths and dance beats used in progressive rock, and I haven't heard anything else like it.
After that, the self-titled is just classic. Everything else is kind of hit or miss with me. Controversially, I think Peter was better alone. |
I think Peter Gabriel was better solo, too.
"Dance beats" in which songs? |
I'm shocked that so many people think Peter Gabriel was better solo, I'm not debating this, but it does contravene the fact that Peter Gabriel era Genesis, was often seen as the pinnacle of artistic and creative music in the 1970s.

I think artistically and creatively in the 1970s, no band came even close to Queen. |
Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was the first album I ever tripped too. So in my book that one will always be number 1.

Gabriel was better solo because he toned it down. Extremely artsy music has limited emotional impact, at least to me. That's why I could never much enjoy Gabriel-era Genesis.
