OK boys and girls, guess that's it then: Yes wins by a margin of 6/4 over Floyd.
Next battle: Caravan --- In the land of grey and pink https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com/im...qsbn2ji07KVXkw vs Khan --- Space shanty https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com/im...6YP3w6qpx4epfQ I know neither albums, so this is new territory for me. Let battle commence! |
i don't have that Khan album
lemme download it first |
Same here don't know the Khan album but it will have to be very good to beat Caravan.
|
It's definitely one vote to In the Land of Grey and Pink from me.
In the Land of Grey and Pink - 1 Space Shanty - 0 |
got that Khan album
yes i can hear the similarities with that Caravan good choice for a fight |
I've given the Khan one a listen, and although I've heard similar ideas mirrored very well, "In the Land of Grey and Pink" is a hands down winner for me as well!

I think they are both solid, but I am partial to the slightly heavier sounds and Steve Hillage on guitar.

My mate the pink elephant says I should stop listening to all of you, and help him with his plans to conquer the world. I think he's had a few too many, to be honest...

i like to smoke an eggroll every now and then
will be voting later still ingesting Khan |
I love both, but surprisingly, Khan does more for me. Space Shanty was one of my firs favorites, helping me get into the genre as a whole. Think I heard a sample on the Adult Swim bumps...
I'm seeing 2 votes each. |

That would then make the vote Caravan (won't be making THAT mistake again!) = 2 votes Khan = 2 votes (as you said: I assume you don't mean you're giving each album 2 votes? Where did that pink elephant go? He's always doing this...) |

I really like both, newer to the Khan album. I wasn't expecting for it to be that good and edges out Caravan, so my vote goes to Space Shanty.
Caravan = 2 votes Khan = 3 votes |
Space Shanty's a good album, but edging past immortal classic In The Land of Grey And Pink?
I'm actually feeling slightly offended. |
It wasn't supposed to be that way, Tore. My vote had a lot to do with the thought that Khan was going to get stomped. I didn't want it to be an utter blowout.
|
I think it's more interesting when people are honest rather than trying to be "different" or just voting for what they think will be the underdog.
|
Yeah, I would stay away from "mercy votes". That said, everyone's opinion is of course welcome. Just make sure it is your honest opinion...
|
Sorry if I wasn't clear in my other post, but I actually did like the Khan album better, hence my (self decided, not based on pity) vote for the album. I like the spacey feel to the album better than Caravan's more Canterbury scene (more so than Khan's, that is) sound. Sorry to offend tore, though, who seems to be located at where the Caravan album takes place.
|
No worries, Frownland. I'm not seriously offended. Well, not much anyways. In the Land of Grey and Pink is one of my favourite albums from the Canterbury scene, but while it's way up there, it's not quite at the top of the list.
Something interesting about In the Land of Grey and Pink is that it's pretty much the Sinclairs' (Richard and cousin Dave) album whereas the earlier and most of the later material was written by Pye Hastings. In the Land of Grey and Pink is generally considered the band's finest hour and it's never been out of print since it was first released. I've sometimes wondered if that was a source of tension in the band, that the Sinclairs pretty much wrote the band's most successful album. They both left the band not long after. Khan is good and and is interesting for including both Dave Stewart and Steve Hillage who played in Uriel (aka Arzachel) together, but I personally think I prefer Steve Hillage's first solo album (Fish Rising) more which includes songs that were intended for Khan's second album. |
I've just listened to the Khan album and sure its an accomplished album which shows the potential of the band, but that is what it is potential, they never stuck around to record a follow-up. The Caravan album on the other hand is the finished product and one of the finest prog albums from the mid to early 1970s period, so no contest really.
Caravan -3 Khan -3 |
Supposedly, Dave Stewart was asked to play on Space Shanty just before recording started so I guess he wasn't much of a member beforehand. Still, he did a pretty good job even if he didn't have much time to rehearse the material. I consider him to be one of the most interesting musicians from the Canterbury scene, particularly from his time in Hatfield and the North and National Health.

[ignorance alert!] Is that the same Dave Stewart, ie of the Eurythmics?[/ignorance alert]

This Dave Stewart is a keyboard player and also composed some of the most intricate, epic and catchy pieces of music from what's generally known as the Canterbury scene. I consider him a genius. |
I assumed not, hence the tags. Would have been pretty damn weird though huh? Annie dancing in a hippy-style fog of psychedelic stream of consciousness, or whatever... :)
|
Sometimes, people mostly famous in other genres of music have demonstrated their prog chops. F.ex since we're talking Dave Stewart and related, on National Health's prog-fusiony debut, Neil Murray plays bass. He's best known for playing in Whitesnake and Black Sabbath! I don't think Dave Stewart from Eurythmics was ever a progger, though.
If Annie Lennox was in a band with the Canterbury-Dave Stewart, she might have to dance along to something like this : One of Dave's catchier compositions from NH. Intro before the song gets going lasts until about 2:10 .. Ahh, what magnificent music. :) |
Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics started out playing fusion folk or something, so he's not that far off

I like Hillage's solo albums more, too, though. |
ok, ready to vote
Caravan's is probably one of the defining albums of prog, and is near flawless Khan's, whilst the guitar is awesome, i have some problems with the singing, as it sounds rather weak so:- Caravan - 4 Khan - 3 |
Okay, so are we done here? Four days since the last comment. Is that how we leave it? Caravan rolls over Khan's foot (KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN! --- in-joke for Star Trek nerds) and takes the prize 4/3?
I have more... |
