Kevin Ayers
Known as the biggest underachiever in rock with a banana fixation I've been listening to this guy a lot lately and Soft Machine have a thread so it's about time this guy did. Think of him as a kind of cross between Syd Barrett & Nick Drake with a bit of Soft Machine thrown in (They play on a lot of his albums). Have a few songs to listen to, that seems to be the done thing when starting threads these days.... Further listening Joy Of A Toy Shooting At The Moon Bananamour June 1st 1974 (With John Cale, Nico & Brian Eno)

Of course, I like Kevin Ayers. He seems like such an easy-going and charming character.
His four first albums are the ones I know the best and I quite like them even if I don't find any of them completely brilliant. Interestingly, I recently checked out Unfairground, his latest album from 2007, and was surprised to find it may be my favorite of his that I've heard so far.

I dig him quite a lot, Joy of a Toy and Whatevershebringswesing are really good, keep meaning to check out more, any suggestions?
I'm particularly fond of this song: I actually got into him after Mushroom did a cover of that. |

Although I have to say on the flip side of that I've not heard one of his albums I didn't enjoy at least a handful of the songs on them. Mind you I've not heard any of his early 80s material yet. I know it has a reputation of being pretty bad but some of it has yet to be released on CD even, so I'm guessing it must me. I would say Shooting At The Moon would be the logical step as you have the two albums that surround it.
