...So You Want To Get Into Gothic Avant-Prog?

Ah, yes. So you've heard me rambling on about Extra Life, Kayo Dot and company, and you're most definitely interested. Well, just jumping blindly into the genre is a very bad idea. First off, you're going to need to listen to particular albums in a particular order, becuase if one just suddenly decides to listen to Zs' 2007 album Arms after they've finished listening to Vampire Weekend, they're going to be in for a bit of an unpleasant surprise.

so, to make your experience a little easier, I decided to help any newcomers of the genre because I hate seeing people mis-introduced. I'm assuming that all of you MBers are grown up enough to not still think that The Mars Volta is "weird" or "unusual" so, I hope you enjoy your trip through the genre :D

Is this a side-project of ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead?

Dayvan Cowboy 11-28-2010 03:43 PM

no, it's a thread brought to you by Ellipses inc.

They are known for owning And So I Watch You From Afar... ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and several other ellipses based names.

Time Of Orchids: Namesake Caution

Ah, Time Of Orchids.... Unfortunately, I got into them too late. They're definitely a beginner's band when jumping into a genre like this. First off, if you're already into Avant-Garde and it's various counterparts, there is no need for this album. But if you're a newbie, this album will be fantastic. So if you feel you're ready for the genre, give this a spin! It should be a rather swell album, as I enjoyed it quite a bit. Advanced fans might be underwhelmed, though.

Eh? Time Of Orchids are a fine band no matter how into or not into avant-garde stuffz you might be. Hell, I even reviewed/upped Sarcast While to my blog awhile back because I enjoyed it so much!

Well, I was slightly underwhelmed but I must admit, it was a rather good, solid album, and I'll most likely listen to it lots and lots of times. Anyways, here's your next dose of Avant-Prog:

maudlin of the Well: Part The Second

Well, n00bs, you are in luck! why? The band is allowing this to be downloaded for FREE off of their website. Want to know why it was free? the entire album was funded by fans, and the band was nice enough to make it free. Now, this isn't anything like their previous albums. The only thing that's really the same is Toby Driver. But, that doesn't make it bad! It's actually a very nice, classy sounding album that wont rip your ears apart like Zs would.

Extra Life: Secular Works

Say what you will about Charlie Looker's girly singing voice, but you can't deny that the lyrics and instrumentals here are epic. Hey, I even quoted the ending lyrics to This Time in my sig. Now, I'm starting you off at their less accessible album for an important reason: you need to get used to the relentless themes. Honestly, I wouldn't want somebody listening to their 2010 album first and saying "I'M CHRISTIAN/RELIGIOUS AND I'M OFFENDED!". Well, I'm going to tell you something: Extra Life has stated several times that he dislikes religion, and that he is influenced by the SOUNDS of medieval vocal music, not the religious themes. But, once you get used to Charlie's voice, you get a beautiful, medieval avant-rock album.
