It's Space Rock week!
Space rock, a term first joined in the 1970's, is a subgenre of rock music that generally contains elements of psychedelic and/or progressive rock. It is generally defineable by meditative, ambient qualities as well as lengthy, instrumental, psychedelic passages and often distorted vocals. A lot of bands in genres such as shoegaze and Noise rock can also often be labelled Space rock.

Yes! I am totally, incurably addicted to any kind of space rock.
Here's maybe the most obvious one, but it's obvious for a reason. And this is probably my most beloved Spacemen 3 song - Honey But, there's nothing like that German kosmische music: Cosmic Jokers |
how about a little love for Monster Magnet
(it doesn't get nastier than the still image of this butt crack) goddamn Superjudge is a FANTASTIC album. |
Great choices, Monster Magnet don`t get anywhere near the credit they deserve, they`ve always been one of best rock bands around. "Superjudge" is a classic album, but their finest has got be their debut "Spine of God" and the title track, a homage to the Door`s "The End" which is the album `s highlight.

i wasn't so keen on the more traditional hard rock angle Wyndorf originally headed in after Powertrip, but i gotta say i really liked 4-Way Diablo. can't wait for the new one later this month, hoping against hope i might actually be able to score a replacement copy of Superjudge at the same time though i'm 99.9% sure i'd have to order it online. |

I think the Vegas inspired "Powertrip" a great album too, but totally agree with you, that when the group started dishing out a more standard hard rock sound, they lost the essence of what they were all about. Luckily though, the "4-Way Diablo" was a great album and a return to form. |
Gonna recommend Space and Time by the Verve. Maybe not purely Space rock, but they definitely have some elements of it in there!

I really love that space rock of the 90s that was really close to post-rock and more ambient shoegaze like:
Labradford from their '95. album A Stable Reference Flying Saucer Attack from the album Further (1995) Jessica Bailiff - Even In Silence (1998) I couldn't find any video on youtube from this album (maybe I'll up it myself) And as for noise-rock turned space-rock, it doesn't get much better than Boredoms on their Vision Creation Newsun album This track is actually a really hypnotic dance music. Just great. But the other tracks on the album are more spacey. |
Never have I heard another band rip off another band so much (Hawkwind) but because it's such a small genre I can forgive them.
Litmus: Obviously being a big Hawkwind fan I will have to offer this up: Germany's Electric Orange are really good too but I only have 2 albums from these and definitely want more. Their album Morbus is a space Rock delight: |
I was really hoping for more in this thread. I am always on the look out for some quality Space Rock and I have heard most of it here :( and I already know of Ozric Tentacles just in case someone decides to post one of theirs.

Love this album with every inch of my heart.

Me again :)
More of the German 70s psychedelic space music Ash Ra Tempel from their first album. This is only the first part of the track 'Amboss' which is over 20 min long Agitation Free - You Play For Us Today (Malesch, 1972) Modern neo-psychedelia, space rock: Bardo Pond - Tantric Porno (Amanita, 1996) Ok, here's finally Jessica Bailiff - For You (Even In Silence, 1998) And here are some relatively newish bands I've been listening lately: Pocahaunted - Ashes is White (Island Diamonds, 2008) Psychic Ills - Another Day Another Night (Dins, 2006) Religious Knives - Brooklyn After Dark (It's After Dark, 2008) I found only live songs from this album on youtube |
^^^
Awesome post. I know of Ash Ra Tempel, Agitation Free (malesch is an awesome album) but Bardo Pond are not my thing but some really great tracks here. Some are not what I would class as Space Rock per se but the Jessica Bailiff and Pocahaunted tracks are right up my street and Religious Knives are a band to look out for definitely. Links would be appreciated ;) |
^^Yeah, sometimes it's hard to distinguish space rock from psychedelia or some kind of post-rock, but I posted these just for the sake of diversity and to cover many decades.
Btw, have you listened to Gong? They're sometimes described as space rock, sometimes as psychedelic or progressive rock, Canterbury scene etc. I've heard very little by them, but it seems they would be right up my alley. (Links are coming :) ) |
