The Final Cut is to me more of a Roger Waters solo album that was perfect for the Early 80's with "Not Now John" and the guitar solos reminding the listener that it's Pink Floyd. I think that the more time moves on, the more listeners will be hesitant to even vote it near their favorites now. There are some great moments which are rendered flawed by some reason like "The Final Cut" (marred by "Would you sell your story to Rolling Stone"...I think this was intended for The Wall, and would have worked far better on it), "Not Now John" (marred by too many uses of the F word), and "The Fletcher Memorial Home" (Too dated now for full effect). Still "Paranoid Eyes" and "Your Possible Pasts" are good songs that still stand up well today.
I think that it's dated now as well as too ego-driven, although the solos in "The Final Cut" and "Fletcher..." still rank up with David Gilmour's finest moments. |

Got this as a Christmas gift when I was a kid, and it still remains one of my favorite Post-Syd albums. Some of their most powerful music is on it, and I have to agree that "Dogs" still remains an excellent song to introduce Floyd to those who have only heard The Wall (Over-rated to me now...) and Dark Side of the Moon. |

Animals is the best. I love the structure of the three epics bookended by the two versions of "Pigs on the Wing". Makes me want to listen to it now.
But, PF's output from meddle through the Wall is almost flawless. The most underrated album during that time is definitely Obscured by clouds. JG |

I love Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It just has that avant-garde feel to it, and Syd Barret was a great songwriter. While I still like Pink Floyd's later stuff, I just think this album is their best. Dark Side of the Moon (of course) is my second favorite.

I can understand where you're coming from. It was something of a daring thing to do, especially when almost everything else was getting geared to MTV in the mainstream when Waters was unleashing his world, which seriously stood out in comparison. In a music world filled with pin ups in floppy hair and cheesy synths, something like The Final Cut just threw a major dark cloud on the Pop Party, and I still view the video to the title track as one of my favorites (Roger in the Psychiatrist's office, shadow of a blind over his eyes).
It is to be applauded for a few good reasons, of course, and when all is said and done it still retains a certain quality. I also like "Two Suns in the Sunset" as well. Last edited by Screen13; 01-10-2011 at 11:38 PM. |
