IMHO division bell is one of the worst records ever produced

Agree re multi-choice, hard time choosing just one between Piper, Ummagumma and relics

Woah, woah, chill, chill.

I once had to sit through some friend of a friend's art dance thing where the entire hour-long show was set to that album. It was like that bit in THe Big Lebowski where they go see the Dude's landlord dance (except that guy had a way better taste in music and picked Mussorgsky as the soundtrack)

Maajo 08-30-2021 02:50 PM

Probably Wish You Were Here is my favorite these days.

Tristan_Geoff 08-30-2021 11:02 PM

Saucerful of Secrets makes a good case 2

Tubeileh 10-14-2021 04:42 PM

Regardless of how great Dark Side was, the Wall will always be better. Piper is a great album too, the beginning of interstellar overdrive is so badass. Saucerful is great too, especially that last song (Jugband Blues) is so sad and really sums up Barrett's story. But honestly, Wish you were here was not as good. Felt overhyped for me. Also More was straight up ass lol.

no Roger Waters and no Rick Wright = No Pink Floyd.

Im a huge fan of Floyd. One of the few bands where I own all of their records, but after The Wall, theyre a different band. A band that is nowhere near as good as they once were. I for one am not that excited for this new LP, but Ill give it a shot.

The Division Bell makes a good contender it's really been clicking for me and The Endless River

Nerd.

I'd rather have Waters in my Floyd for sure, but I'm not a purist, I think the dismissal of post-Waters Floyd is unfair since I think Division Bell and Pulse were both pretty good efforts.

Wasn't a fan of Endless River as it really did feel like it was just a bunch of unfinished scraps, but I'm down for a new record of written material from Gilmour, no Waters isn't a dealbreaker for me, the lack of Wright however could be. Wright was such a key part of their sound that no I can't really call it Pink Floyd without him, this is clearly going to be a Gilmour record with the Floyd brand, but here's hoping it'll still be decent.

Favourite Pink Floyd album? Dark Side of The Moon but given my age I’m no longer get off my face on the chemicals it deserves. Judging by their more recent live performances, neither are they.

I saw Waters on Friday. It seems he has such hatred for Gilmour that playing songs he sang in was off limits. There were two I can remember they played - Money, Us and them. Gilmour's bits were done by one of the guitarists, who can really sing.

Given the animosity, I'll provide two answers - one for the Gilmour era, one for the Waters era.

Gilmour - Division Bell (High Hopes is one of the band's best songs, PERIOD)
Waters - The Wall

Most definitely. I was listening to the 2019 remix while on the road yesterday.

I'll take your word for it. Will give it a few more listens.

Almost 6 years after I wrote this, I finally got around to giving the entire album (The Wall) a really good listen. Several times, in fact. And indeed I was wrong, there's not much filler. In fact it's amazing how many good songs there are on the album.

I've also been listening to a bunch of other Pink Floyd and I've concluded that it's about a 3-way-tie between DSOTM, The Wall and Wish You Were Here as their best album.

But I think their very best song is Comfortably Numb. The chorus brings tears to my eyes.

Mindy 03-02-2023 09:14 PM

they suck, sleeping aid music, brain damage, and wish you were here have their time but that's all out of a band that put out albums.

Woah, woah, this isn't the Unpopular Opinions thread!

Lisnaholic 03-03-2023 07:01 AM

:yikes: Has Mindfulness been talking to elph ?!

Actually, he's not entirely wrong, because , imo at least, Pink Floyd reached their innovative peak in 1970 with Atom Heart Mother. Everything after that was like consolidation, retrenchment or refining of the now easily identifiable, in fact predictable, Pink Floyd sound. I put this down to artistic caution on D Gilmour's part, plus (total guess, tbh) the elevation of Alan Parson's influence: a studio engineer who lets a pursuit of audio perfection get in the way of rough artistic endeavour.

They still came up with some top-quality material, including three sides of The Wall, (as "Drive" has recently discovered), but to me, the albums scoring the high numbers in the polls here are not really their best: only me and 7 other guys correctly voted for Atom Heart Mother as their favourite, whereas 77 have mistakenly voted for Dark Side Of The Moon as being their favourite. I'm sorry, but that is not a valid opinion to hold. ;)

I think I said this years ago but I still think Animals is incredible. Granted it's a rather short album in comparison but I love it as a whole.

Synthgirl 03-03-2023 07:48 AM

Animals is my favorite. Lyrically not my favorite, but I don't listen to Pink Floyd for lyrical genius anyway and the compositions are top notch. Meddle and Wish You Were Here are my second and third picks.

Lisnaholic 03-03-2023 08:18 AM

What I know about Animals is Battersea Power Station, which features on the cover, so I will give the album a go as you two think it's a good one. :thumb:

As for later Floyd albums, I thought Final Cut was good, but it's more about Roger Waters, songwriter, than about the spacey instrumental excursions of Gilmore and Wright.
(Also helps if you share Roger Waters' preoccupation with linking post-war Brits back to their WWII past.)

Key 03-03-2023 11:22 AM

Coincidentally I listened to Animals on my way to work this morning and definitely enjoyed the music more than the lyrics though the lyrics aren't necessarily bad. Just very focused. Works as a whole though, like I said. Plus, this video is so good:

Mindy 03-03-2023 03:37 PM

Another brick in the wall is a nice tune also, so I guess they are a 3 hit wonder to me lol

Blasphemy!

Having said that, I think I can see why some people might think their music is a bit sleepy. A disproportion of their songs all have this similar, slowish tempo. They don't have many songs I would consider to be "fast" songs.

Thanks for that video, Key: that must've been quite a show! I was surprised to see so much focus on our man Trump, and that must've gone down well with the crowd because he has no friends south of the border afaik.

...and yet, unlike so many other bands, they never put any standard guitar blues songs on their albums. So this track is quite exceptional, I think:-

If there were such a thing, I'd sooner listen to an album of this stuff than The Endless River tbh

mattrixs 08-13-2023 12:01 PM

Piper at the gates of dawn and The wall :)

Tristan_Geoff 08-14-2023 11:03 AM

Have to say Saucerful of Secrets these days

mattrixs 08-14-2023 09:55 PM
