Dark Side of the Moon
Meddle. As much as I love the Syd years, and think that Piper is one of the greatest debut albums of all, Meddle was a complete maturing of their sound that almost broke them out of being the very interesting but still not too solid band they were for a few years after Barrett's departure - In short, the magic was finally working again. Although Side One was a bit shaky, "Fearless" and "One of These Days" are classics, but in the end, it's all about "Echoes."
To me, Dark Side is the most focused and Animals is has some brilliant moments, but for some reason, I always come back to Meddle. |
"Meddle" but if you would have posted "Pink Floyd Early Singles" that would have been my choice!!
Live at Pompeii is pretty Freggin awesome too. "Set The Controls For the Heart of the Sun" makes me go in to a trance..
Man, I was torn between Saucer and Meddle, but eventually went for Meddle simply because I'm more familiar with it. Also, once on bad LCD, I listened to Saucerful of Secrets and felt my soul die a little bit.
Good to see some Saucer love! I really dont know how to answer this because I like Animals, Meddle and DSOTM. I love Wish You Were Here and Saucerful Of Secrets. It would be one of these but I cant decide which one.
Dark Side of the Moon by far (generic choice is generic.)
I'm also in love with the album put out by The Flaming Lips, they really mashed a wicked style perfectly into an already flawless album. |
^ I actually thought their cover was rather embarrassing, I generally like The Flaming Lips but it was a bad idea doing that DSOTM album
I can't choose between The Wall, DSOTM, Saucerful or Animals.. I listened to Animals today and rediscovered the amazingness of it... |

Animals
Opted for the Dark side in the poll, However I regularly flit between, Wish you were here, Animals, & Meddle... Occasionally I'll delve into Relics.
Probably Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here. Generic, I know. But the albums I've heard and enjoyed the most. Animals third though.
Relics for me. I like their psychedelic stuff, and Relics is almost quintessential. It would have been Piper if it wasn't for stuff like 'Pow R. Toc H." and "Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk'.
Ummagumma would be my second choice. |
Heh, Pow R. Toc H. Is awesome IMO. Agreed on Stethoscope being the worst though, I don't really skip any tracks on Piper though I always listen to it all the way through.

I count the live Ummagumma and studio Ummagumma as one album. That's why it's my second choice -- "Sysyphus", "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict" and "The Grand Vizier's Garden Party" ruins it for me.
The live side of Ummagumma is fantastic, the studio side is the worst thing they ever did. Though I actually like Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict, it's hillarious and fascinating, everything else is just boring.
Either Dark Side of the Moon, or The Wall. I picked The Wall in the poll though...
I love everything up to The Wall, but The Dark Side of the Moon is definitely my favorite. Just a flawless album.

Dark Side of the Moon. The lyrics there are brilliant I could relate to a lot of what is being said about the human condition.
I have to go with Animals. It is just so fierce sounding.
Apart from one of the most famous album arts, The Dark Side of the Moon has been one of my favorites, classic album, amazing stuff in there.
It's impossible to vote, some them are equally FANTASTIC.
I thought 'Wish You Were Here' would be leagues ahead of the competition and voted their debut out of sympathy. However it probably changes with the weather.
Animals is my favourite Floyd album, not only do they sound great, great songs and a wonderful piece of social commentary. Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here are all flawless albums aswell.
Am i allowed to say nobody makes albums this good anymore? |
After watching Live at Pompeii, and hearing Echoes, I have to say Meddle is my new favorite. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a close second, though. Both are incredible. I actually prefer Gilmour's voice over Barrett's, but Floyd with Syd was out of this world.
I shoulda resisted this thread. Things will get messy.
I despise Pink Floyd. Most overrated band of all time. I vote Piper, natch. And that's because Syd. |
Wish You Were Here is clearly the best. What's wrong with you people?
;) |
Ive always liked Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.
Animals has always been my favorite. "Dogs" is one of my all-time favorite songs and the rest of the album is just as strong throughout.
Gotta be The wall for me, though Dark side and Division bell are up there
1. Dark Side Of The Moon
2. Wish You Were Here 3. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn |
I know the obvious choice is Dark Side of the Moon, but I think there's a very good reason that's considered the obvious choice.
Wish you were here.
Meddle second, DSOTM third. And then the first two. |
Dark Side of the Moon
the whole album is in general just the best.. + great total sound of it |
The Division Bell with only two votes? It's not my favorite but it deserves to be at least in third place. Some great stuff on there.
Only one vote for "Ummagumma"? God, I'm special! No seriously, it's more or less impossible to single out one 'greatest' from the Floyds. There are several candidates, of course, but each and everyone of them has its own flaws. "Piper" is too sloppy and unfocused in places, "Atom heart mother" is mainly carried by the title track and little more, "DSOTM" is too generic (and grossly overrated), "WYWH" is let down by too much sax noodling and the half-spoken "Have a cigar", "The wall" is plainly dull and "Meddle" and "Animals", well, those two actually come close to Floydish perfection. The former is however marred by the shorter tracks and the latter, however good in itself, is not really innovative and innovation is one main criterion when it comes to the greatness of Floyd.
The two forgotten soundtrack albums however, they definitely deserve mentioning even if the songs themselves aren't particularly innovative either but some of the tracks ("Green is the colour", "Cymbaline", "Wot's, uh, the deal" etc.) are among the best Floyd ever did. So all in all, I think that "Ummagumma" sort of summarizes all the good sides of their experimentation, and of course it's the first side I'm mainly referring to here. The versions of "Saucerful" and "Eugene" may or may not be the best Floyd tracks ever. |
