I am helplessly addicted to Hypnos 69 right now..and I must admit..that's not a bad thing. This, one of if not THE, best progressive rock band out there right now that's not considered part of the classic bands, in my opinion. I mean maybe this band's not the most progressive or groundbreaking but they exert something into their music I feel most progressive rock bands lack..and that's feeling. I often times feel like some progressive rock/metal bands are wanking around on the guitar just to do so and show off, but these dudes, I don't feel that. I don't know, maybe I'm way off about progressive rock in general but that's just how I normally feel when listening to neo-progressive rock and such. Then again with new progressive metal, not so much rock, I feel like a majority of the bands are carbon copies almost which just voids the point of it being 'progressive' music, lol.
/sorry for long babble. Also, this isn't a recommendation to anyone in particular just people in general who have no heard them. |

I will have to give Hypnos 69 a listen. Since I'm also, a fan of Progressive Rock. ;) |
Aqua Nebula Oscillator is a band that really deserve your attention. They have some very good videos on youtube ie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBwSj...eature=related
|
anyone here heard any Anglagard?
I've only read some reviews on George Starostin's site and wonder if I should torrent anything by them? |
More of a question than a recommendation, but... is Lou Reed's album, Berlin, considered progressive rock? Some people consider it art rock, but what's the difference?
|
Few new up and coming bands to check out...
Syd Arthur, Wolf People, 12 Stone Toddler, The Slytones.....all amazing unknown psychedelic bands. |
Quote:
art rock is mostly instruments playing weird stuff like Trout Mask Replica, I guess, progressive rock has a more classical based structure of progression |
I'm looking for a modern prog band with some metal (or any other kind of influences) elements with some awesome riffing and great instrumentation.
So what do you recommend? |
i'm not a psychedelic fan... i don't know a lot about the genre... so just want to ask... is this psychedelic?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWhj_WEuVZI |
nah.
Psychedelic is not as melodic as this song you've posted.
If you hear king Crimson, then you'll understand what psychedelic is. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, my recomendation for today is: Van Der Graaf Generator -- Bunsho |

If someone wants to hear a decent example of psychedelic music, then I would cite bands such as The United States of America or The Doors. Can't go wrong with a little neo-psychedelia either... |
13th Floor Elevators - anything with an electric jug is automatically psychedelic.

this genre is confusing... i am familiar with The Doors of course. so is that Psychedelic?

These guys are worth checking out, Colour Haze, their self titled album is fantastic, one of my favorite albums.
Highly recommend. |
Any good modern prog rock albums that I should listen to or any prog rock in general?
A few prog bands that I enjoy are Gentle Giant, Yes, Henry Cow, Art Bears, Univers Zero, Magma, early Soft Machine, and Pink Floyd. (and Faust since some people consider them prog rock) I'm looking for something more accessible, though -- I have plenty RIO albums. (Baggs may suggest something if he wishes to) |
If you want accessible, why not UK popsike?
There's good cccrrraaackkk out there, son. Whats really good -BUSY! - recent RIO? |
Popsike (or retro-psych) is a great genre as long as your not listening to mass-fodder like Fleet Foxes or Baby Woodrose.
Are you familiar with the trio, WALTER GHOUL'S LAVENDER BRIGADE? This is primo take on Kinks/Floyd "Relics"-period. Only problem is the sound-production is a bit amateurish on the first one. When I said as much to Oliver Crumb (I believe it was) , he got all huffy and refused to admit it. ****, I said recent, didnt I? But this gotta be a decade old. Their website is long gone, but you might get summat here: WALTER GHOUL'S LAVENDER BRIGADE | Free Music, Tour Dates, Photos, Videos Excellent, excellent "accessible". |

(I like Fleet Foxes, by the way). |
Sorry.
Bagg's is ONLY looking for vintage instruments, retro-sound prog. .... Baggs heard only the Fleet Foxes cd with the Breughel coverart. Only enjoyed one track. One gets the feel they are some sort of BoyBand trying to cashin on this fad. |

Fleet Foxes is excellent |
I have a list, probably some are known, some aren't, i'll put it here anyway:
Myrath Theocracy Harmony Outworld The Black Noodle Project Holderlin Lehto & Wright Ciccada Seven Tears Orphaned Land Riverside Aspera Haken I'll add more later or something. |
Milano:
Ciccada is truely an excellent recent Greek psychedelic band. But as to Riverside.... |

Stuff like "Any Colour You Like"
I've tried a lot of psychedelic rock acts, like Hawkwind and Quicksilver Messenger Service, and I find none of them comparable to the trippiness of Pink Floyd. Basically, what I want to hear is psych rock with mind bending synths, akin to the ones found on "Any Colour You Like" ... from the mighty Dark Side of The Moon. Only early Porcupine Tree are satisfying my psychedelic rock hunger, so far. Any recommendations ? Regards. |
Tool always Tool. A Perfect Circle, Deftones, Chevelle, Puscifer. Yeah those are the kings

Alright all, I need some help.
My little brother has recently discovered a love of progressive rock and has been listening to almost nonstop Yes and Rush. I like the bands, but my gosh I am sick of hearing them and hear my brother rave about the bass tone and my gosh listen to the guitar distortion on this part and I love Geddy Lee's voice here and etc etc etc. Anyway! I need some more prog rock bands! Lots more! Maybe with styles similar to Yes and Rush, maybe not... I'll suggest anything to him. Also, jazz influences are welcome and would be well received, since he is basically a jazz musician who plays rock... hence, enjoying prog. So yeah. Thanks ahead of time. |

Anyway ELP perhaps? Their album Tarkus has a jazzy feel at times to it so they may be a good one to start him off with. |

I kind of classify 70`s prog into two categories and they are the more robust exuberant stuff like Yes, King Crimson and ELP etc. or the more whimisical Canterbury inspired style of bands like Soft Machine, Jethro Tull and Genesis. Sure their is also a mixing of both styles by a lot of these bands as well but prog more or less fell into these two camps. Some of the best prog stuff ever was put out by Kansas on their first 6 studio albums along with the mid 70s to late 70s releases by Styx. All of these albums are gems. Also some of the best prog albums were put out by non-prog bands such as Wishbone Ash and the album Argus. |

It reminds of, when I was addicted to the bands mentioned also. Just about all the band members of Yes have solo albums, Steve Howe, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, and Rick Wakeman as well. 'Good Luck'! |
