The Official Marillion Thread

I know, also on Last.fm it is clearly possible to see that albums with singer Fish has much more plays than albums with Steve Hogarth. BUT... This band doesn't have a thread here and because I found them in 2008 and it was very big change for my music taste, I am in need to make a thread here. Before Marillion I listened only mainstream, folk, rock and bands like U2 and R.E.M. With Marillion I am big fan of progressive rock, progressive metal and I appreciate more complicated music in general. So I am grateful that I found this band - for me it was like a key for doors to progressive music. I have here on MB at least one buddy who will probably like news and disscussion about Marillion. You can find lot of informations about Marillion on their web and for now small details for some curious people... Fish is also on Ayreon album Into the Electric Castle. Steven Wilson (from Porcupine Tree) worked with Fish and he also produced Marillion's album of Hogarth period with name Marillion.com., released in 1999. Between Marillion fans this album isn't so much popular. But Steven Wilson also produced some songs on album Marbles (2004) and this album is the best almost for all Marillion fans of Hogarth period. Very nice and in depth here Petra, I'm glad I went and brought those albums after seeing how much you like them. I have to get some Hogarth albums so I don't just stay in one era with this wonderful band. :)

Good to finally see a thread about them :) I really love the band, however I haven't listened to them alot in the last year or so after a major kick some time back. Fish era is my favourite, personally can't stand much post-fish.
Hearts of Lothian was the inspiration for the naming of my house(farm). Probably in my top10 favourite tracks ever. :) |

Marillion has many studio and many special and live albums so I can't say I know all their discography. Sometimes Steve Hogarth also sings songs of old Fish period so you can try to compare it. I don't judge them. They are two different singers, two different personalities. I think it's impossible to compare them. |
I'm not too big on neo prog but Marillion are a solid band.
But I do think they're overrated a bit by prog fans. Script for a Jester's Tear is fantastic. But Misplaced Childhood is considered a prog masterpiece and it just sounds like really 80s arena pop rock to me, the guitar work is great though. I don't know why Genesis get so much hate for doing that kinda thing, but Marillion don't. |

I never did like much what Hogarth did with Marillion from the late 80's onward, but 'Script..' and 'Fugazi' are the best neo-prog of the 80's without a doubt.
Still, its kind kind of a shame that Marillion and their ilk influenced so many bleh bands of the 90's and beyond, as they themselves were quite good for a time. :( |
