Rush for sure, but you forgot hemispheres! So much better. Supper's Ready is a close second.
|
You forgot Can's Tago Mago!
Or are Can not prog enough for you?? |
I picked Supper's Ready, with Starless and Close to the Edge as close seconds, followed by Gates of Delirium.
|
lotsa good stuff there - I picked Tubular Bells just because of its progression, virtuosity and melodicism
CTTE a second, Starless 3rd and 2112 4th, Echoes 5th, Gates of Delirium 6th Thick as Brick 7th mostly because I don't like Pt. 2 much |
My favourite at the moment is Mumps .. I've fallen so deeply in love with Hatfield and the North that it's probably bordering on soppy. :p:
|
Voted on the Soft Machine one. Didn't get enough attention, and I love the band.
|
That's a tough one to choose, but I don't you can go wrong with Pink Floyd on this choice.
|
Weird choice for Magma. I would have went with "Mekanik Zain" from HHai. It's basically a super condensed amazing life performance of a rearranged MDK(with added fiddle). Eighteen minute performance, powerful as all Hell.

It's no biggie or anything. Just more a curiosity. |
There is no "Best".
Stop thinking like this. Its embarrassing for all. |
Quote:
I assume it's not embarassing having a favourite? ;) |
I realize it can be a totally unfamiliar line of thought which goes against all your most ingrained predilictions and illiberalities, but there can be no such thing as a single, singularity-"favorite".
For a few reasons - one of which is that Time changes all. I cannot expect music forum people to understand this. Oh! And please take Rush off that list. |

The goal of this thread is roughly to discuss prog epics. Talking about favourites is one way to enable that. Hence, for all practical purposes, it works just fine, despite your flawed logic that there can't be a favourite. |
Birthcontrol "Backdoor Possibilities" is a TOP epic concept.
Put that on your list. |

No, it does not.
I misunderstood the thread. (My idea of "epic" is the whole shebang -a concept. Not a single track.) |
I'm really regretting saying that Close to the Edge was only reasonably impressive before in another thread. I now realise that it truly deserves it's great reputation. Honourable mentions to Thick as a Brick and Tarkus.
|
Marillion's Grendel?
4 real that sounds like a 3rd or 4th rate Gabriel-era Genesis and is pretty boring to boot i have to admit Misplaced Childhood is very good, though |
My 2 favorite prog epics aren't on the list!
Cygnux X-1 Book II by Rush and The Musical Box by Genesis are both remarkable tracks that really shouldn't be overlooked. Both are really lifechanging. |

While I like Tull's TAAB better as a complete album. Close to the Edge I think is the greatest prog epic; it is just flawless in every way.
|
My favourite prog epic at the moment is National Health's Tenemos Roads (which is not in the list), but I guess I can still stand by my vote for Close to the Edge. It really is brilliant even if I've long since listened the crap out of it :)
|
Probably few people have even heard of it, but "Creepshow" by Twelfth Night is a great prog epic, if it could be added?
|
Maybe I'm just an idiot asking stupid shit, but isn't Shine On You Crazy Diamond a prog epic?
|
Quote:
you should either vote for Parts I to V or VI to IX it's not one huge epic |

As far as proggy epics go, I've always felt Starcastle deserve a bit more love than they get. :D
|
if you want to get all technical about it, "echoes" isn't even prog
it has about 3 chords, and the solos are improvised jams not really a "traditional" prog song, in any sense of the word |
Echoes is psycedelic prog.
But the best epic is Pink Floyd - Dogs. |
Close to the Edge on the list, but I like ELP's Karn Evil 9 and Pictures at an Exhibition.
|
There's no doubt in my mind, "Close to the Edge" is the ultimate epic prog song!
|
I agree with most of what was posted to this thread, plus I'd like to add one
The Snow Goose Camel - Snow Goose Excerpts - YouTube |

TAAB is a great album IMO but it works even better as a condensed live piece, no better example than this absolute M'er F'er of a performance Jethro Tull - Thick as a brick - live - 1978 - DVD - YouTube |
I just realised this poll is over a quarter of a decade old, and still more than half the options have had zero votes. Can we have a new version of this poll with all those 'nul points' epics replaced by others?
|
|
I'm not much of a Prog fan, but I do like Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield.
|
Quote:
But feel free to make a new thread with a new poll. |
IMO the winner of this would specifically be the Yesshows version of Gates of Delirium. This is just a monster
|
Too many faves on the list to pick just one. This might be a controversial suggestion, but I'd offer that "Knights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues deserves a spot.
