I know of them because of Jon Poole's time in the Wildhearts, & Ginger's work w/Tim Smith.

A guy made me a mix CD of their stuff that I never gave a good chance. Maybe I should rectify that.

Cardiacs are undoubtedly one of the coolest bands of all time; where else are you going to find the sort of straight up energy of The Pixies or The Stooges married with VDGG's shadowy saxes and GG's quirkiness?

Which reminds me...I really need to get Sing To God.

those comparisons are spot on, (actually had to google VDGG to get what you meant lol), it seems like you and Tore are already familiar with Cardiacs which is a pleasant surprise.
If you need help getting STG just holler. With your fingers

Heaven Born and Ever Bright was my first exposure to prunk, an experience I can only describe as energetic and anthemic. I've been meaning to check out some more from these guys - if HBEB is meant to be their bad album then I've definitely struck a goldmine.

I'm downloading their album right now.

My favourite has come to be 'Tarred and Feathered' (the one i posted above that), especially the lyrics...
you are right, absurdity is the order of the day, but Smith's lyrics are great, much of it abstract but he obviously put alot of thought into them. (Like alot of the best ones there is an underlying purpose... and they work best in tandem with the music o'course)

yeah HBEB seems to slip under the Cardiacs radar, i would like to hear that as it's their first album as a quartet (any trepidation at the dissolution of the classic line-up is dispelled by the grandiosity of 'Sing To God')...
Your 'energetic and anthemic' description is on the money, in his own madly ambitious way Smith is crafting personal pop songs, i think to a certain kind of musician alot of Cardiacs stuff is like a never-ending orgasm of chord changes... But yeah, he works alot of 'anthemic' choruses etc into the songs, I never find them to be dull or predictable but neither are they too dissonant and experimental to get annoyed with...
The only drawback, as previously mentioned, are the perpetual energy levels (both sonically and compositionally).

There is some jaw-dropping on the choobs of them playing live, i don't know how they did it!
