Favorite Psychedelic Songs
Name 15 of your favorite psychedelic songs, but no more than 5 songs per band. (Otherwise, I'd have a list of nothing but Beatles and Monster Magnet.) I put my list in alphabetical order.
1.Baby Gotterdammerung - Monster Magnet 2. Boris - Melvins; I'd call it psychedelic, just slow and sludgy. Or maybe I'm just trying to justify sneaking the Melvins in somewhere. 3. Come Together - Beatles 4. Dopes To Infinity - Monster Magnet 5. Fairies Wear Boots - Black Sabbath 6. I Am The Walrus - Beatles; Perhaps my favorite psychedelic song. 7. Joan Crawford - Blue Oyster Cult; The lyrics are insane. 8. L.A. Woman - Doors 9. Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf 10. Man on the Silver Mountain - Rainbow 11. Octopus's Garden - Beatles 12. Subhuman - Blue Oyster Cult 13. Tales of Brave Ulysses - Cream 14. Waitin' for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago - ZZ Top 15. Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon I didn't include bands like Electric Wizard or Sleep. They're great stoner bands, but not exactly what I mean by 'psychedelic'. |
Pink Floyd's Time is one of my best and your list songs are also my favourite.

Personally the old 70s stuff, besides Pink Floyd and Hendrix, wasn't at all Psychedelic compared to the stuff that is created these days. With that said, here are my top five most psychedelic songs (meaning they aren't necessarily psychedelic rock songs, but instead invoke a psychedelic atmosphere):
5. Dark Stars in a Dazzling Sky - Acid Mothers Temple 4. 50 Million Year Trip - Kyuss 3. Time - Pink Floyd 2. Drip Drip by Comus 1. Dopesmoker - Sleep |
Iron Butterfly- The one, the only- In Da Gada Da Vida.
The Doors- Riders On The Storm |

I was making a distinction between the stoner/desert genres and the older psychedelic stuff. I'd call a song 'psychedelic' if it relies upon nonsensical or cryptic lyrics. I'd call Stairway to Heaven psychedelic, for example. It's this type of psychedelia I was asking about. A lot of modern stoner bands (e.g. Kyuss) seem to rely more on the music instead of the lyrics to create atmosphere. Or at least that's how it sounds. I love both types, though. Thanks for the comment. I am familiar with Kyuss and Sleep. Will have to check out Acid Mothers Temple and Comus. |
Would anyone like to name uh... any number ... of their favorite psychedelic songs?

I admit that a couple of choices are borderline (Melvins; ZZ Top). I always thought something was psychedelic if it employed cryptic or bizarre lyrics. Trippy use of the instruments is helpful (as are drug references), but I don't know if it's necessary to have that to qualify as psychedelic. |
Come together was not pyschedelic bro. I was there.

They finally reissued on CD a little while back and it's a nice issue combining the two LP's, but it's not the same as the original Kaleidoscope vinyl issues. I'm not one of those vinyl guys either, but in a few cases I guess I am. (A separate Fairfield Parlour CD reissue containing that Kaleidoscope offshoot group's two LP's is also nice. I wasn't familiar with that output until much later when I found the Kaleidoscope CD reissue.) Anyway I agree on the band and the track.... |

The 12 notes that constitute the unforgettable sustain-guitar run for what some consider the most psychedelic track ever....were nicked from Coltrane's "India".

My favorite song from the album. More Folk/Psych, but it works for me, and it's a way to keep the conversation going on a hardly-known album. |
