Prog album covers
Sure, when they're bad, they're really bad.
But when they're good, they're epic. There's several great album cover artists associated with the genre, mainly the Hipgnosis gang (most notably Storm Thorgerson) and Roger Dean. So anyway, post some of your favorites. Some of mine. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ront_cover.jpg http://bp1.blogger.com/_RjS6PXtJg8w/...se-Frontal.jpg http://i38.tinypic.com/oqkciu.jpg http://991.com/newGallery/Ozric-Tent...ift-437230.jpg |
The full sleeve for In the Land of Grey and Pink is so cool!
The full UK art for the Octopus sleeve is also good .. of course, it's by Mr. Dean. http://www.progweed.net/reviews/gent...octopus-eu.gif Seldom mentioned on MB is Matching Mole, Robert Wyatt's band after he left Soft Machine (Mathing Mole is a pun on "Machine Molle" which basically means "soft machine" in french). They have a couple of good albums with sweet covers :) This is the 1972 debut : http://www.disco-robertwyatt.com/ima...gmole1_big.jpg This is their second album released the same year : http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HF5NaouiSd...ing%2BMole.jpg |
Capability Brown's From Scratch has always seemed so nice to me:
http://www.alexgitlin.com/npp/cb2.jpg I've also always loved the cover for Lizard. http://dreamchimney.com/slvs/King_Cr...0814074220.jpg |
For me Magnum had some fantastic covers:
http://www.rock-pop-tipps.de/images/...lers-night.jpg OK It's like a rip off LOTR but it's such an intimate and warm cover with the browns and oranges. http://www.mystic.pl/upload/Image/CD...eTheDragon.jpg I like the composition here. There are 3 things vying for your attention yet nothing detracts from another and that city just looks so magical and elusive. http://www.sci-fi-o-rama.com/wp-cont...ws_mirador.jpg This is the full cover from Magnum's Mirador. The relative lack of colour works brilliantly here and is seemingly simple yet looking closer it is incredibly layered. |
Here's a couple prog. covers I consider pretty damn awesome! = D

Wow, some really good ones. Those Magnum ones are epic.

That Klatuu is bloody awesome! not heard it either!
I am going for relatively generic ones but hey ho: http://www.progarchives.com/progress...1617102008.jpg I wanted the full gatefold of this for better perspective but couldn't find it. I love the 'bedsit' vibe of the cover and the reflection in the mirror is sublime. http://www.melodic.net/img6/12thnight12thnight.jpg It doesn't immediately strike you but I spent many a day in my youth poring over the small details on this album. http://www.ecompil.fr/bk_img/0000/04...06540023_S.jpg Just seems to fit their lush, gentle, pastoral compositions and quintessentially English. |

I like Moody Blues' In Search of the Lost Chord ..
http://biolog.jamsbio.com/images/prog/moodyblues.jpg And I like this : http://cfs2.tistory.com/upload_contr...YxLmpwZw%3D%3D .. Alright, so I like the album art. So what? :D (And who doesn't secretly like Dust in the Wind anyways?) |

Not a huge fan of the music tbh, but the Giger artwork is perfect. |
I love the album and the artwork.
H.R. Giger rules. He's done some other great album art too. http://www.ugo.com/music/metal-album...ga-therion.jpg |

This is the official cover for Voyage 34. That first image was a mock cover when the album was a bootleg and not an official release. |

....I'm on a celtic frost kick as of late. I'm guessing appollo is the guy with clothes and dionysius is the guy with no clothes on. http://www.grayflannelsuit.net/wp-co...emispheres.jpg the back of this album has two brains floating over the desert. |

Marcus Keef did a load of prog covers.
(But you never heard of him, did you. Thats because you know nuffink but Porcupine Tree.) |
Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time
http://www.google.com/url?source=img...cQ4XKcYMsYeLeA This is one of my favorites. The way the bluffs swirl into cloudform, how the circular theme contrasts with the many parallel lines, the small silhouette above the sea of clouds and abyss... |

Island "Pictures" Complex, difficult Swiss prog (with Giger coverart) http://s.dsimg.com/image/R-267029-1184864027.jpeg OHR was historically a very important German record label. It was founded by Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser who later entered an asylum and some say died there (although nothing is really known). Peter Geitner was art design for many Ohr releases. The above coverart is one of his. He also ended up in an asylum. Reinhard Hippen was another artist for OHR. The first five OHR releases boast his artwork - all on the motif of dismembered body parts. |

PROG coverarts which break the mould
By this Baggs means:
Prog lp covers are known for engaging (usually detailed) coverarts, use of classical art, etc. Like the music, prog coverarts are bombastic. Prog is not generally known for ego-rush, BAND PHOTO front coverarts.(Like "Love Beach").* Or is it? http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...PUvWv-2aOOsHDy (This is an EASY one, so Baggs is expecting at least SOME contribution from you lazy lot.) * When they DO do band fotos they are usually done in a disparaging or humourous way : eg. Birthcontrol, the 2nd Fireballet, or that one where they dress up in women's underwear - I forget the band. |
Here is a (sort of) lateral:
Okay The Residents were not prog. But can you think of a prog band which, like The Residents, released AT LEAST 4 LPS where there is narry a single band picture displayed on sleeve or inner??? Are you progmastermanly enough to know the answer to this? |
i think this one breaks the mold just for being ugly as fuck:-
http://m1.ikiwq.com/img/xl/4eko9GKRLlBcDMs6tKSlfb.jpg RJ Dio's pre-Rainbow band, in case you're wondering, which Blackmore hijacked and sacked the guitarist |
Your submission has NOTHING to do with my thread.
Besides which, Elf were rubbish and NOT PROG. Go back to the main board and talk Rush. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...h/cleerarf.jpg |
^^wow, you're really friendly for a newbie
|
Baggs is not here to be friendly.
Baggs is a Prog*masterman. Here to instruct. Lap up my fire-nuggets of scintillant info. *and Psych, and Fusion |

I have a Belgium press version of Deep Purple "Paint It Black" 2lp live set which has a GORGEOUS colour Bosch cover.
Ive done an intense web search for this coverart, but cant find it anywhere. I would go to the bother of scanning my personal copy and posting here, but... since no one is even bothering with this thread...why should the BaggMan? |

Floyd has something like 20 releases.
Baggmaster is talking of a band which had only 4 releases, none of which showed the band. |
No 'baggmaster' never mentioned a band with only 4 releases and just asked for 4 releases.
Eloy, Jethro Tull, Barclay James Harvest, Genesis and King Crimson released over 4 albums with 'narry' a band photo in sight. |
