I voted Muse. It might be that I don't know the others as well but Muse is just like... So awesome.
|
I like alot of new prog bands, I'm much more into the new than the old prog I spose. I voted Coheed and Cambria cause they are one of my favourite bands.

and ps. my vote will be for volta. it would have been tool, because maynard has 1000 voices, jones uses his simple guitar skills + techy **** to make some of the craziest sounds ever, the bassist has actually figured out how to properly seat himself in that very strange arrangement without EVER over-playing, and obviously, carey is about as intuitive as it comes with drummers (NOT SAYING HE'S THE BEST!),...... BUT, puscifer, one of maynard's sideshows, is coming to a town near me and he is selling tickets to meet him before the show... at 250 bucks a pop. no vote for major sell-outs like that. so volta gets it, just cuz because they have a tight sound (even though i've heard they suck live) including all sorts of musical elements with a heavy dose of latin influence, which i can't get enough of. and they're original as all hell. sorry for my three posts. ;) |
My vote goes for The Volta. But Id rather say The Fall of Troy or We are the City.
|
Most my favourite bands seem to fall under this genre.
Tool, The Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree are obvious ones but I also love Oceansize, Pure Reason Revolution, Amplifier etc. Then there's also Muse, who are only midly related to prog, but I've loved for a number of years. |
You didn't bother making a welcome thread so I might as well post it here: welcome to Musicbanter!... stalker

Hola Last FM buddy.
|
No Wolfmother? I like Wolfmother.
|
What's progressive about Wolfmother?
|
Is there such thing as rap-prog?
I don't like any rap, but I would be willing to attempt such a genre... |
probably some with prog tendencies but i doubt there is an actual genre.
|
Do you know any artists?
It would be interesting to hear rap with strange time signatures.... |

I voted for Muse because I think they have the potential to record one of the best prog albums of all time if they'd get serious about it and sod off Modern Rock radio oriented tunes.

Look him up. |
Porcupine Tree without doubt. Probably one of my favourite bands of all time.

Porcupine Tree.

I'm going to be stereotypical and say......
Battles :( god, I'm predictable. I would have voted for Kayo Dot or TMV but you can only pick one, and Battles got me into post-rock, so I owe quite a bit to them. And I'm never going to vote Muse because they have these boring, generic tendencies, and the song they did for twilight made me frown the entire time it was on the radio at school. I don't know why, but Muse just has no appeal to me whatsoever, and I'm a big prog fan :( |
Placed the wrong vote, wanted to vote Oceansize :(

Voted Porcupine Tree, but I'm way into quite a few of the bands listed, actually. Ozric Tentacles, Muse, and Tool are some of my favorites.
|
I went with Kayo Dot. Of their discography, I can say that at least two of their albums (their debut Choirs of the Eye and their latest Coyote) are personal favorites, and while the other two aren't quite as enticing, they still have very intriguing moments that give them more than enough merit (well Blue Lambency Downward is rather weak, but whatever). Their avant-garde tendencies, as well as the big size of their instrumentation make the music so much more rewarding. The fact that they contain so many spoken word portions and random spasms of ambiance may make some think they're one of those 'pretentious art crowd bands', but underneath that lie some of the most intriguing and structured pieces of avant-garde/prog rock that I've seen in a long time.

Ironic, considering my previous adoration for that band. Thanks : ) |
Just out of curiosity, have any of you heard about the new Watchtower album coming out? They aren't exactly new blood, but it's been a while since any material from them has been released.
|
Lot of names I've not come across yet, but where is Pure Reason Revolution, The Pineapple Theif, The Mayan Factor and Fair to Midland??
My vote goes to Tool, mainly because Tool and Fair To Midland were the two bands that got me into the genre. |
Tool, no doubt about that.
|
I voted for The Mars Volta, but Coheed and Cambria made quite an impression on me with my first purchase by them.... whatever the heck the 4th album is called. The name is way too long to write out.
