Best Gong and Hawkwind albums to start off with?
I've been really getting into space rock lately, and I noticed that these were 2 of the first major space rock bands. I looked them both up on wikipedia and they both have huge discographies. I have no idea where to start. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to where to begin with these bands?

In Search Of Space & Space Ritual for Hawkwind

Angels Egg for Gong.
|
For Gong, the Radio Gnome Trilogy: Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg and You.
For Hawkwind, what Urban said, but throw in Warrior on the Edge of Time and Hall of the Mountain Grill. |
Thanks guys. Unfortunately, it is far too late to put these on my Christmas list, and I'm already going to buy Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart, but I'll be sure to check all these out ASAP.

Those album recomendations are spot on. Include Quark Strangeness and charm-Hawkwind. Also well worth checking out are Ozric Tentacles and Steve Hillage.

You by Gong and Warrior on the Edge of Time by Hawkwind.
no - Angel's Egg and Levitation hang on... Flying Teapot and Doremi Fasol Latido, no, Master of the Universe, er... it's all good! If you like Gong, why not check out Magic Theatre by Drum Circus (1971) - it's stories of pixies and prostitutes with sax, flute and percussion mania, manic male and female vocals, gongs and tinkly bells two years before Gong released Angel's Egg. OK, it hasn't got Steve Hillage on it - and that is a major drawback - but it's still a great album. |
I`m listening to Gong at the moment and came across this interview with Daevid Allen:rofl:

Gong - Camembert Electrique, definitely.

I'd definitely go with Hall of the Mountain Grill by Hawkwind first. For Gong, Flying Teapot.
