Comus

Well it was only a matter of time before I made this thread really, but I can't believe I have neglected it so long.

Of the people here who know of/have been introduced to Comus I don't think I've heard a single complaint, they have had a long lasting influence on a wide range of genres. From Current 93 to Opeth.

Their album First Utterance has an RYM rating of 4.14 from over 1000 reviews.

They're basically the bomb.

And as always, if you're interested in checking them out just PM or state an interest here :D

I can't believe there isn't already a thread on them. From the handful of songs I've heard.. I must agree, they are indeed the bomb.

ProggyMan 12-01-2008 10:12 PM

The Herald is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. The rest of the album, while not beautiful in the traditional sense, is almost as good.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 12-01-2008 10:45 PM

this is bullshit. i've read people raving about how unique this is, and so i listened to what you posted and it just sounds like the b52's with fiddles.

And that's not awesome enough for you?? Talk about hard to please.

Great thread btw. Comus are the ****ing ****.

How does Diana remotely resemble the B-52's, with or without fiddles?

Astronomer 12-02-2008 03:20 AM

I'm definitely interested in checking this band out...
interest stated.

Guybrush 12-02-2008 03:56 AM

I already got a hold of it some time ago, but I've yet to listen to it. Something to do tomorrow in the lab, I guess. :)

Seltzer 12-02-2008 04:05 AM

Only if you plan on running around smashing test tubes and assaulting people with vernier callipers. :D

Well then I'll have to do something about that!

Make sure to give the whole thing a spin it meanders about for awhile before getting true direction and then it is brilliant.

Sorting out thousands of dead bugs and various other invertebrates from samples in small vials of alcohol, I'm afraid .. but maybe I can assault some of them with my tweezers. ;)

Double X 12-02-2008 12:45 PM

The way I heard you talk about them earlier I thought they were some old metal band. It actually sounds awesome, I'll be sure to check them out.

Barabajagal 12-03-2008 08:46 PM

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Who knew acoustic instruments could sound so violent and nasty? Two of the songs (Diana, Song to Comus) are about luring a young girl in the woods to rape. Here is a lyric:

"Hymen hunter, hands of steel, crack you open and your red flesh peel
Pain procurer, eyes of fire, pierce your womb and push still higher
Comus rape, Comus break, sweet young virgin's virtue take
Naked flesh, flowing hair, her terror screams they cut the air"

It's like folk music on an acid trip from hell. Love it.

Rainard Jalen 12-05-2008 12:44 PM

I had a listen, it's not that bad, but there are way better albums from the period though. Nothing special really.

Barabajagal 12-05-2008 02:21 PM

From the period, yes, but from the genre? (if you can pinpoint it enough, that is.) I still haven't heard anything quite like it, and I'm an avid listener of folk/psych/rock from the '70s.

Just out of curiosity, what are some albums you'd place above it?

jackhammer 12-05-2008 03:46 PM

I'm going to stick my neck out and say whilst i can definitely appreciate and it's an original album, I very rarely play it and get bored quickly. Perhaps if I got back on the old dope I could get into it but just because an album is wildly different doesn't mean it's anylessmore palatable personally.

Comus 01-02-2009 05:06 PM

I'm so intimate with the album that I've never gotten bored during it, I just relax, close my eyes and gather it all in.

I lol'd.

I listened to First Utterance, but I really hated the vocals, and it really bored me. I can see how it's likeable, but it made my stomach turn. Didn't enjoy at all.

Comus 01-02-2009 05:11 PM

Try it again.

Inuzuka Skysword 01-03-2009 08:51 AM

I REALLY don't understand how First Utterance can be boring. Especially the track Drip, Drip which has as much energy as a song by The Mars Volta.

Oh, and is it true that Comus is making a new album?

Comus 05-23-2009 10:38 PM

I don't know, I sort of hope not, becuause their second was ****, but it's the proper band that's semi-reformed so I guess we'll not know until we get some proper news about it. If it's good it's going to be amazing, that's for sure.

boo boo 05-24-2009 01:00 AM

It is amazing how they have gotten as popular and influencial as they are among proggies for just one album.

I take it their second album "To Keep From Crying" from 1974 is no good then?

Comus 05-25-2009 04:22 AM

Yeah it's shite
