Ozric Tentacles? Gong? Nektar? Hawkwind? Space Rock?
I know there's a strong following here for such bands.
There's a krautrock thread and a 60s Psych thread. Why not one for space rock/psychedelic(which doesn't fit into either one of those two). Lots of interesting and unknown gems here. I've definitely collected enough to make a compilation. But I'll post one later since my net is pissing me off atm. Anyways, post away with the bands you know. I'll definitely check out all the recs :D I'll start- Hidria Spacefolk - Symbiosis http://www.progarchives.com/progress...0222622005.jpg A very solid modern space-rock band from Finland. Musically, I don't think they are anything new for someone familiar with say Ozric Tentacles, but they definitely do feature everything i love about psychedelic/space rock. Love this album! Has a very middle-eastern kinda sound as well, which works out extremely well. I'm not able to find any tracks from this album anywhere, but anyways this would be a good overview of what they sound like. Track name: Pajas From their second album "Balansia". Hidria Spacefolk - MySpace Note: Symbiosis is a little bit different from this. |
Don't forget about Eloy.

Kingston Wall - Kingston Wall 2(1993)
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/8228.jpg Another band from Finland?! Well, yes. Part 2 of the kingston Wall Trilogy, this one is a bit more on the classic rock side, with a little bit of Rush/Pink Floyd influences. Mainly guitar driven. The vocals were a weak point(on some of the tracks) but that didn't prevent me from listening to this. Must say, has some great melodies and superb guitar work. I will check these bands out sometime but i have so much backlog to get through, I need to cut back for a couple of weeks.

Hmmm Rev'd Flasher on EBWF likes Kingston Wall - I still have to check them out.

I'm a sort of casual Space Rock fan.
I like my Space Rock to actually sound like it was recorded in space. Really echoey with a pounding bassline & weird noises & very trippy. I don't think that applies to the couple you've posted so far and they wern't really for me they're a bit too proggy/muso for my liking but i'll keep an eye on this thread with interest. |
Well, yeah, your space rock criteria is definitely hard to find.
I guess krautrock satisfies that more. I'll see whether i have something very similar to hawkwind or gong. |
Thinking about it and from what i have, Nektar's Journey to The Centre of The Eye and A Tab in The Ocean might satisfy your criteria.
There's also a band named High Tide who have quite a few similarities, but all i have is a compilation and haven't listened to any actual album of theirs. I still need to dig more deeper. Yes, Gong ftw. They are at least borderline 'psychedelia' for me; often lumped in with the Canterbury scene bands, at least for this concept trilogy of records, but they have a distinct proggy bent. Well I basically just described space rock...
Anyhow this stuff doo-doos on Ozric Tentacles from a great height. I never investigated them outside of these but they still tour with Daevid Allen. Nektar - Journey to The Centre of The Eye
http://s1.subirimagenes.com/otros/pr...rney-to-th.jpg Although their second release, "A Tab in the Ocean" is much more refined, It's more of a prog. rock album with spacey elements. Journey... takes more influences from krautrock. It's a concept album about an astronauts journey in space and half of it is instrumental. Highly layered, dreamy and quite enjoyable. The organ/Mellotron take center stage here. I already posted a track earlier, but anyways, here are more - YouTube - Nektar - prelude_astronauts nightmare YouTube - NEKTAR-JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EYE YouTube - Nektar — Countenance YouTube - Nektar - warp oversight(track ends at around 4:10) |
