Default Porcupine Tree

Okay, I'm waaay late to Porcupine Tree. I just started listening to them in the last 3 weeks. I downloaded every album and listened to them in chronological order (and then turned around and bought my favorites). I think they have some great music. The problem I have is that some of their albums are at least half prog-rock-space-jams. I don't mind some interludes or the occasional, well thought out instrumental; but when six out of ten songs is a prog-jam (Up The Downstair) it gets a bit self-indulgent. Having said that, when they are good, they are really f'ing good. So far, my favorite three are:

I just downloaded their first album. I like the first half more than the second half. But I have only listened to it once. As far as Absentia is concerned, I have yet to see it in the same light as most PT fans - in other words, I don't think it's their best. But then again, things tend to grow on me. I'm sure I'll appreciate it more with some more listens.

Now Wilson said that new album of Porcupine won't be influenced by metal so it will be more like albums before In Absentia, more space/prog rock.

I keep trying to get into them, but yeah, it's kind of so pretentious and boring most of the time (even for a prog band) that it's hard. I like the odd track, but even then I couldn't tell you which ones. I think the only album I sat through in its entireity was Fear Of a Blank Planet, and again, I can't remember anything of it.

Like Opeth, they just feel kind of sterile and dull. Some of it is ok in doses, but like anything Steven Wilson does, I get bored with it.

Have you heard Schoolyard Ghosts by No-Man? I feel it would appeal to the asthetic I'm coming to recognise you enjoy.
