I am so jealous! I almost bought tickets to that... but then I realised I wouldn't be in the country. A few of my mates are going. You HAVE to tell me all about it! Even though I'm not a huge fan of The Incident I would love any opportunity to see them live.

I should have pics and I promise I'll let ya know how it all goes. :D standing a bit further back though, Section 2 at the Enmore but I think the rail is easily jumped.

So @mrguy - you see, you really should listen to these three:
Stupid dream - 1999
Deadwing - 2005
Fear of a blank planet - 2007

I think after listening of these albums (+ In Absentia), you will know if you love Porcupine tree or not.

I can get Stupid Dream and Deadwing for the same price... which one to get first?

Not easy decision. I will tell you - Deadwing is my personal number one of all discography but Stupid Dream is maybe easier start for beginners because it has more pop-rock melodies like Piano Lessons or Stranger by the minute.

My order of Porcupine Tree discography is now 1. Deadwing 2. In Absentia 3. The Incident 4. FOABP 5. Stupid Dream 6. Lightbulb Sun 7. others :) But it can change someday.

People say mostly that the best album is In Absentia because it has catchy parts and metal parts together. Deadwing is also little bit with metal parts but it has some calm songs like Lazarus.
And Stupid Dream is great but different - here are all-time favourite songs Even less and Don't hate me (they are on dvd Arriving somewhere...) but this album is without metal influence.
Song Tinto brass is some crazy psychedelia piece, example of "old" Porcupine Tree and their first albums.

So for help, I will post for you some songs from Deadwing and some from Stupid Dream and you can make your own decision.

Stupid Dream (1999)

Even less - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRWfvsE7FS8

Deadwing (2005)

Deadwing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBLKxR8inQI

Saw them at the Enmore in Sydney a couple of days ago...

Holy **** it was amazing, they played The Incident completely start to finish and then took a ten minute intermission and played one of the best sets I've heard in a while. They played almost a complete hour overtime (which was great) and actually blew the PA system!

'Start Of Something Beautiful' and 'Russia On Ice' were great but the middle part of 'Anesthetize' was the highlight for me, everyone was so into it. A few shocks were that they played 'Normal' from The Nil Recurring EP and 'Stars Die' plus I forgot what it was but something very early in their career was played towards the end. Anyone that tries to tell me they are a souless band live, that they don't get involved with the audience, is full of ****. Encore was predictable - 'Trains' and that again was awesome. Pity about the PA blowout at least they decided to play longer. I think we got out at about 12AM after it started at 8PM.

Sleep Parade were good too but got ****house sound for some reason? The lead singer played his guitar with what looked like his teether but it turns out he was screaming into it making it play weirds sounds... not sure? If anyone else seen it could ya let me know?

All in all it was a life-changing concert. I had high hopes and they supassed them in every way.

Thank you for your report! :) Great you enjoyed it so much. I can imagine Anesthetize live is breathtaking

I don't have yet a chance to see them live so at least I am waiting for the new DVD which should be out this year, probably in April 2010.

Here are two setlists from two concerts where they recorded the DVD:
1. Porcupine Tree Concert Setlist 013, Tilburg, Netherlands 2008 | setlist.fm
2. Porcupine Tree Concert Setlist 013, Tilburg, Netherlands 2008 | setlist.fm

So for sure the DVD will be all songs from FOABP and some others...
I guess there will be Normal, Stars die and Sever because these 3 songs were played on both setlists :)

@DiSTANToblivion, maybe Sever is the third old song from your list?

I think you're right about 'Sever' - it's a pity they never played the whole 'Anesthetize' but it was still amazing. Looking forward to that DVD. :D

People were calling out song names all through the gig and Steven Wilson was very funny when he said back "While I love the time honoured tradition of calling out songs.... there is something that every musician has and it's called a set-list" hahaha (and what a set-list it was. I honestly wasn't blown away after I heard The Incident for the first time but it grew on me. After seeing it performed live completely it's safe to say I see it in a whole new light. The video accompaniments to the music were perfect too.

Petula07 02-09-2010 09:21 AM

Hmm, I hope on DVD will be full Anesthetize! If not, I will be really sad :D

As I wrote now in my second shout on your Last.fm, I am PT fan only for 5 months so for me all albums were new.
And I can tell you I love The Incident. It was very very interesting to listen to all discography and to see so big difference between On the Sunday of life and The Incident.
I admire diversity of S. Wilson. I am also into pop-rock so I love Blackfield too although I understand why its boring for somebody.
But for example... Lazarus and Russia on ice are so different tracks but both so lovely! He can make hard heavy music but also nice sweet melodies and this is something what perfectly fits to me. Really great band!

mrguy 02-26-2010 06:28 PM

I'm waiting for The Incident to arrive. :D

Good! :D

And did you try all other albums that we recommended?

If not, The Incident is probably hard or boring listening for beginners...
