I would recommend including Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever as some kind of duo, or both individually because they take Coheed and Cambria to the next level. I would have still voted for David Gilmour, but based on the modern guitarists you included, these guys are among the cream of the crop.

It's between David Gilmour and Frank Zappa for me.
|
Of those listed I put John McLaughlin for various (subjective) reasons and because I met him once and he was a really nice bloke. Also, when it comes to Hawkwind, I much prefer Huw Lloyd-Langton.
|
Was a hard one for me but had to go with Martin Barre from Tull.

Buckethead. Petrucci comes close (proud prog nation attendant here), but nothing can top the Bucket when it comes to progressive guitar.
There's just no one like him. How many guitarists with such technical talent play so many genre's of music? Very few. How many of those very few guitarists can write songs as good as "The Landing Beacon"? None. Though, if I considered Hendrix a progressive guitarist, I might have agreed with the guy who said Hendrix. |
I had discovered this thread before I had discovered The Mars Volta and At the Drive-In. I had voted Alex Lifeson but now that I am a little more familiar with the list I'd go with Omar.
|
I love all the guitarists on this list (though I'm not sure Buckethead is really prog). I went for Steve Howe, because he is just... whoo. If I could cast more than one vote I'd give them to Robert Fripp, Jan Akkerman and John Petrucci.
|
I wish I could vote more than once :(
I went with Petrucci |
Damn! Why's this gotta be so difficult, for me its a toss up between Fripp and Adam Jones.
|
I was stuck between Petrucci and Buckethead but went with Petrucci cause i just saw him live and he was sick so that influenced me.
