Karoli (Can)
was sorely tempted by Omar and also Zappa, but although I like Omar's playing I don't actually listen to him much (Mars Volta does very little for me tho they are interesting, tho his solo records are sometimes very cool) and Zappa I think of as being in a genre all his own, tho he is one of my favorite guitarists to be sure |

I honestly couldn't make a final decision. There's too many greats up there for me to pick one. And too many things to consider: longevity, variety, feel, skill, adaptability, prolificacy. My tops would be John McLaughlin, John Petrucci, Frank Zappa, David Gilmour, Adrian Belew, Adam Jones, Buckethead and Omar Rodiguez-Lopez. Why is Al Di Meola not up there?

Did he ever play prog? When I think of Al Di Meola, I think of jazz and jazz fusion, but not prog.
Although looking at that list and who's on it, I realize there are already inconsistencies if playing or having played prog is a criteria.
