Of the former members I've had the opportunity to chat with (Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner, Don Preston, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Tommy Mars, Chad Wackerman, and Arthur Barrow) every single one of them said that Zappa was indeed a very stern taskmaster but that he was also amazingly fun to work with as well and they all seemed to recall their time with him with genuine respect and fondness for the man.

And now for the reason for me revisiting this thread today...

This seems like it has the potential to be the best Frank Zappa documentary made so far. I hope they can pull it off.

I would like to add Mike Keneally to that list. I've known Mikey for 15 years and he would say that describes FZ to a tee.

First 4 minutes of "Lumpy Gravy" lp.
Then throw the rest away.

(Still...wouldn't mind having origional on Verve. Worth 50 readies at least.)

Anyone got Zappo's groupies lp, GTOs?

I've got the CD copy of the GTO's album. Haven't listened to it in a long time, though. Might have to give it a spin today and refresh my memory. I seem to recall I wasn't particularly impressed with it the last time I heard it.

I'm going to delve into some Zappa, partly because of what I've read on MB and partly because of an IRL friend who raves about him.

I've heard Freak Out! multiple times, but that's the only complete album of his I've heard.

What do you guys recommend?

.

My first full album was Apostrophe (') and I've been hooked ever since. Hot Rats and Overnite Sensation are worth a listen too.

In addition to the ones already mentioned by Frownland, here are a few more worthy of your time (IMO)...

Spoiler for YouTube Videos:

Although I tend to prefer the 60's & 70's stuff, there are many more worthy Zappa/Mothers albums spanning his entire career that are just as interesting as the ones we've already mentioned. His catalog is quite lengthy and still growing posthumously.

I'm an ignorant about his music, but there is this nice song.....

It's better to forget about the lyrics..... But the music is not bad!

Zhanteimi 06-10-2016 04:42 PM

I've decided to start with:

Chunga's Revenge
Hot Rats
The Grand Wazoo
Burnt Weeny Sandwich
Weasels Ripped My Flesh
We're Only in It for the Money

and Waka Jawaka.

EDIT: I've added Uncle Meat and Absolutely Free.
