I quite like progressive metal.
Seltzer's list is excellent. I would especially recommend Pain of Salvation, Spiral Architect, Devin Townsend, Spastic Ink(these guys are crazy) & Maudlin of the Well. Actually, F*ck it and listen to them all Anyways, just a few more suggestions- Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Grey Choosing between this and Parallels is so damn annoying. Epic and awesome. Psychotic Waltz - A Social Grace Weird, obscure, complex stuff. The vocals add even more to the weirdness. Definitely something i don't come across very often. Shadow Gallery - Tyranny An amazing concept album with superb melodies, mindblowing guitar work(and i really mean it) backed with excellent keyboards. Sounds even a little bit power-metallish at times, but tbh, I think that's a good thing here. |

I have to say I consider Kamelot the kings of progmetal, but I also love Shadow Gallery, Threshold, Silent Edge, Epica, Adagio, Fairyland, Labyrinth, LAcuna Coil and a hundred others BUT I hate Pain of Salvation --- sorry, I just cannot get into them.
PS I hate "death vocals", not that that refers back to PoS, but it does leave both Haggard and Opeth out for me... |

Dream Theater from Images and Words to Six Degrees is the definition of prog metal. Most prog metal bands are just trying to replicate what Dream Theater did.
Pain of Salvation, however, is amazing. One of the most creative and emotion-inducing bands I've ever heard. I wouldn't even label them as prog metal, they're completely their own thing. |
