What album by Opeth would you recommend most?

I like Watershed the best, but Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park are good as well.

Still Life is good too.

All Prog Metal bands with very, very few exceptions are based on simple rock constructions and are fundamentally no more complex than Nickelback - and that includes Opeth, who sound more than a bit like Nickelback on their latest album, Watershed, to my ears.

It is not true to say that Prog Metal is a blend of Prog and Metal - this myth needs stamping on (as if old school Proggers didn't know this already in their hearts!), because generations are growing up not understanding what Prog was really about.

The term "virtuosic" appears with depressing frequency to describe music that uses often remarkable virtuosic playing techniques to create music that is, from a compositional point of view, almost entirely unremarkable - which contrasts completely with the likes of Gentle Giant.

Prog is not about lots of scale practice, owning a Mellotron or sounding a bit like Pink Floyd (or allegedly Camel, in the case of Opeth).

I know from past experience how sensitive Prog Metal fans can be, so let's clear the air immediately by saying that this post is emphatically NOT a bashing of any band (including Opeth!), merely a pointing out of home truths.

Still Life and Watershed are my favourites from Opeth.

I really couldn't get into Watershed at all. Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park are my favourites but generally their whole output is superb. The juxtaposition of brutal riffing and ambient acoustic work makes them one of my favourite bands.

Despite my earlier post from a couple of years ago when I was quite into metal, I'm generally not a fan of prog metal and I find that it tends to completely miss the point of what prog rock is about. Opeth is one of the few bands that grasp it... I'd say Morningrise is my favourite of theirs.

I still have time for bands like Arcturus, Meshuggah, Pain of Salvation, Maudlin of the Well, Slough Feg and Devin Townsend who push the envelope. And the prog/tech twists on other metal genres like death/thrash tend to go down well - I've always been a fan of bands like Coroner, Mekong Delta, Voivod, Artillery, Lykathea Aflame, Gorguts and Demilich.

Queensryche would be ok, but vocals makes me want to go deaf
And about Opeth, it enters my top 3bands at all. Morningrise and Still life are my favorite albums
