Thats basically like saying any band that makes mellow somewhat psychedelic music is ripping off Pink Floyd. You could call Radiohead and Flaming Lips ripoffs of Pink Floyd by using that logic.

I removed that from my post in order to bring up a wider discussion in the official PT thread. Maybe merge. Cheers.

thedaytripper 07-08-2008 01:43 PM

i like them both, they are music for the wandering mind, and that can relate to alot of people i think. but pink floyd has alot more publicity and pizzaz to their music. very psychedelic

TheaterDreams 07-12-2008 07:12 PM

It's not fair to compare DT to Pink Floyd. DT is Progressive Metal. PF is progressive rock. Pink Floyd is also a much more well known band

Edit:

I love both bands alot. I have to say though as far as songs go, I find I like more DT songs than PF

PF: Comfortably Numb, Time, The Turning Away, SOYCD, ABIW are pretty much all I like

DT: The Glass Prison, Under a Glass Moon, Forsaken, Panic Attack, Octavarium, Stream of Consciousness, As I Am

I'm 21 Btw

COBHCNick 07-20-2008 06:02 PM

I prefer Dream Theater, though Pink Floyd is damned great.

Tough choice

Edit: would someone please explain to me why Dream Theater are considered 'progressive'
I thought overlong guitar solos & high pitched vocals went out in the 80s.Doesn`t progressive mean progressing in your music rather than sounding like a relic from 20 years ago.

No. Obviously you are in the wrong board. Maybe even the wrong forum. And btw, if you actually took the time to listen to Dream Theater instead of going by what your other dork friend tell you, you'd realize that Dream Theater's music has changed quite a bit sense they started. And by your definition of Progressive Music, they would be classified as such.

Keep up the good work champ

That post was made before we had a prog forum , and I have every right being here being a fan of Psychedelia and a couple of prog bands , and more importantly Pink Floyd who this thread also happens to be about

I have heard about as much as I can tolerate of that band thank you and that was my own decision nobody else was involved in making me laugh everytime I hear this band.

So? Why should I care the basics are still the same , dull stadium rock with excessive soloing , cheesy lyrics and a frontman who still thinks it's 1987.

Why? what's progressive about a 10 minute guitar solo?

I LOL at the 11 people who voted for DT.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-22-2008 11:55 AM

10 of those votes are all from Don's IP *

*May or may not be true

boo boo 07-22-2008 11:58 AM

Believe it or not a lot of people actually like Dream Theater.

Inuzuka Skysword 07-22-2008 12:01 PM

There may be a lot who like Dream Theater, but those who voted for them over Pink Floyd are just plain stupid.

WWWP 07-27-2008 12:34 AM

Ugh, Pink Floyd hands down.
It's ridiculous to even compare the two.

zekethefreak 09-16-2008 12:52 AM

I definitely prefer the music of Pink Floyd, although I think Dream Theater are the more talented musicians. Bands can be fast, technical, be as tight as they come, but there was an emotion behind the music of Pink Floyd, that is completely void in the music of Dream Theater. Do I still like DT? You betcha...

FireInCairo 09-16-2008 05:03 AM

dream theatre are technically brilliant but that does not make it good music. They are unemotional and lackluster songwriters.
Pink floyd on the other hand can write songs, the primary pursuit of most bands.

^This.

imdesigner 09-16-2008 09:24 AM

that one is rather tough for me, i really enjoy both bands. naturally i would go with dream theater for personal speacial reasons - but i am gonna go with pink floyd.

Grunge_Junkie 09-17-2008 08:43 PM

metal vs stoner rock? ahh im gonna go with Pink Floyd stoner rock is better.

lucifer_sam 09-17-2008 09:12 PM

Pink Floyd isn't stoner rock, not even close. I would say a few songs of theirs are space rock, but there's no Floyd album that comes close to being called a stoner rock act.

Wayfarer 09-17-2008 09:24 PM

lol genres

lucifer_sam 09-17-2008 10:05 PM

I had to say something. He was asking for it.

Wifey Boozer 09-18-2008 11:47 AM

You can get stoned to almost anything. On the contrary, PF is very trippy.

Fyrenza 09-19-2008 01:32 AM

pink floyd

and yeah
its 2 trippy 2 trip 2
4 sure
they are acid rock

parlato 10-08-2008 07:02 PM

PF!!!!!! definitely. good classic stuff with a uncomfortable yet accepting feeling? weird to describe, but meh :P

Berringer 10-10-2008 06:48 PM

It's Pink Floyd all the way for me. I've started to get into Dream Theater now (in the last two or three years) more than I ever did before, but Floyd's work is just too powerful.

spark10036 10-10-2008 07:29 PM

i remember since i was in high school,it was cool to be a dt fan. I had a few cds, a shirt which i usually wore at school, and i always talked about how ignorant was anybody who didn't knew a change of seasons, metropolis,a scene from a memory and etc.i even went to a concert to see them in toronto when i was there on holiday and i felt i was complete...now i can even listen to a single song of theirs...they are just showing off...and the truth is they always did.come on,who needs 4 minute guitar or drum solos?!?!?!?yes, they are a few of the most talented musicians out there, but they lack essence.
as for Pink Floyd...i don't know...right now i feel they are if not the best, they are definitely one of the best bands ever, who captured their time and era perfectly.they produced few of the greatest recordings ever and they influenced fans and musicians for 40 years.
so yeah, i voted pink floyd

HotRockinJohnny 10-12-2008 09:57 AM

Pink Floyd....with out a doubt.

Thats no contest. It's like comparing a fine, tender, "melt-in-your-mouth" steak to Mickey D's ground beef. No competition.

Now I'm hungry, dammit...

Dream Theater are part of the reason that I chose the name "ihateguitarists" a while back. I can't stand that extremely obnoxious style of playing. Since when did playing the guitar become more of an athletic activity than a musical one? Just because you can play really fast doesn't mean you can write songs worth the crap. Dream Theater prove this.

Not to mention, Pink Floyd are awesome! <3

aw yeh

Anteater 11-01-2008 12:20 PM

Hmn, I pretty much agree with everyone on Pink Floyd. Sorry to the DT-fanboys, but maybe this thread would have been better off if you had picked a group more on DT's level to compare with (AKA Symphony X or maybe Redemption).

I do give Dream Theater the credit, however, of giving birth to both Images and Words and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which in my opinion were impressive efforts from an otherwise boring group of musicians. It's just a shame Awake, Scenes of a Memory Pt. 2, and their other 6 studio albums are fairly lame in comparison to those two. :(

At this point, I think John Petrucci should just go join some other band and knife LaBrie through the back before he goes...

Amen to that (generally). :)

Hilary 11-04-2008 09:05 AM

Pink Floyd is one of my favourite bands ever so I'm not going to go against them.

However, I do like Dream Theater too but it's not much of a comparison. I can't really get in-depth but Pink Floyd just seems more creative and different.

cgw 11-04-2008 05:33 PM

I never heard of Dream Theater before today. Time to jump over to the punk forum.

Agreed, DT have no chance against Pink Floyd!

Dream Theater is prog...?

And, I really like Dream Theater, but is this even a contest? I don't know how 11 people mustered up the balls to vote against Pink Floyd when they're obviously better.

dac 11-06-2008 02:03 PM

There are at least 11 idiots in this forum...

Astronomer 11-06-2008 04:54 PM

I'm probably one of them.

I think I agree with ihateguitarists in that Dream Theatre's style kind of gets very obnoxious at times.

Pink Floyd FTW.
