This thread is dumb.

Pink Floyd. I'm 37.

Ages ago I used to be into all sorts of prog rock, including Dream Theatre, but even back then I didn't care that much for them. Just having all the technical know-how in the world doesn't make one "great." That sort of virtuoso attitude is a big turn off for me. Sometimes playing a few quarter notes in 4/4 is a good thing, you know?

You've gotta be kidding me right?

I have the first Theater album, and granted it is good, but I wouldn;'t even put it in the same style as the Floyd?

How are the later Theater albums? should I be checking them out?

Clownbaby 12-21-2007 12:27 PM

You can't really compare them in my mind, I prefer Dream Theater's style of music in progressive metal compared to psychdelic rock of Pink Floyd or whatever you want to call them but it would hard to say DT is better than Floyd...

under 12-23-2007 12:11 AM

Pink Floyd. but than again they dont have John Petrucci with his famous one leg on the step by his mic

but the sound of Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon is absolutely phenominal.

nothing can beat that.

whos_next 12-24-2007 11:25 AM

i dont even have a clue who dream theater is but i doubt theyre anywhere close to floyd-15

You cannot possibly say something like that. How can you compare two bands if you have never heard one of them? I much prefer floyd because I have heard Dream Theater's music and consequently I could form an opinion. You may love DT when you hear them.

whos_next 12-24-2007 11:40 AM

your probably right

sometimes thats true. it also depends on there taste of music, but you know, i never really liked the genre of DT but i listened to them and i liked them, except with the vocalist. I really dont have a fancy for DT's vocalist. thats my opinion :)

Not to contradict you, and not that he meant what im about to say, but if he hasn't heard of Dream Theater it is probably because they have been a lot less influential in music and made much less of an impact on the industry than pink floyd. Therefore not making PF the better band, but more influential.

Or maybe im wrong, idk but thats how i saw it.

under 12-25-2007 02:12 PM

we all have different views on this. I think you could be right, and you could be wrong. but its a free opinion ;).

and dream theater hasnt had much influence on people like Pink Floyd has because Pink Floyd im sure has been around longer and has made a bigger inpact in the music industry. Dream Theater does have some influence like with John Petrucci and his way to play a solo easier. But as you said "less infuence" you say they still had an influence which is right. Just not as much as Pink Floyd.

sleepy jack 12-25-2007 03:11 PM

If Dream Theater had come out the same time as Pink Floyd they may have impacted a specific genre but not music as a whole which Floyd did. In addition to that their influence still wouldn't have been as big.

jackhammer 12-25-2007 05:49 PM

No! the simple fact is that one band was judged better than the other purely because he has only heard one of those bands. I am not questioning what band he prefers, merely the criteria he used.

under 12-25-2007 06:47 PM

yeah. he did say that he's never heard of Dream Theater, and rating between Dream Theater and Pink Floyd and only knowing half of the story is not really qualified as a "rating" per say.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-25-2007 06:53 PM

The real question is do you really need to know Dream Theater.

I'll go for a no on that one.

under 12-25-2007 10:06 PM

well. i suppose if you've heard Dream Theater and not really know them as in what there music is like than i agree with you. But you should still have some back up information on something like that in case somebody brings up a point as jackhammer did.

it can be a no and a yes, depends on how you look at the situation.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-26-2007 07:10 AM

I don't even need to listen to Dream Theater , just looking at their album covers makes me want to punch stuff.

gpackin 01-03-2008 12:40 PM

I enjoy both of them, but voted for Floyd. Like in many polls, the bands that are being compared are very different. While they are both great musically, I feel that Pink Floyd has just contributed much more to music and our culture in general.

im trying to be sure, is that a good thing or a bad thing? i mean it could go either way, you may feel good when punching a little boy in the face or you may feel bad hitting an old person in the hip. either way, i mean Dream Theater will get anyone riled up to go on a mass murder trip. not really...but you know.

Don't judge a album by it's cover. :nono:

One of the best rock bands of all time or a second tier heavy metal band. I'm going to have to go with Pink Floyd on this one. :p: Convinced yet, boo boo?

Loser 06-02-2008 02:12 PM

I voted for Pink Floyd. For the sole reason, because I feel Dream Theater isn't prog (which apparently is debatable), and the music doesn't settle well with me.

British_pharaoh 06-02-2008 02:15 PM

I'm confused by this poll
mainly cos Dream Theater have no place being pitted against Floyd

like having the 1990's Mike Tyson fight against Pee Wee Herman

OK then. I refuse to listen to someone who has cheesy album covers , cheesy lyrics , songs that have 5 or more parts denominated by roman numerals by people who could give a 10 hour long interview on the subject of tuning pegs.

Better?

Perfect. :tramp:

blackloulis 06-02-2008 07:48 PM

Pink Floyd of course, you cant compare a bunch of berklee students with the history of rock (do not forget Barrett, too)

Pow R. Toc H. 06-02-2008 09:30 PM

pink floyd kills dream theater, but not because of syd barret's contributions

and yes I do realize my screen name is the title of a syd barret song

Demonoid 06-05-2008 02:23 AM

Shoot me for this, but i actually like dream theater's Darkside of the moon cover.
Petrucci does an excellent job reproducing the original guitar sounds.
Only thing you guys will bitch about again is the vocals, but i don't mind the high pitched voice LaBrie has.

Also, why would you wanna compare DT with floyd?
I prefer PF, but then i don't hate DT as well. They are in no way claiming to be better than Floyd, nor do they sound the same.(you can hear some influences here and there, but generally they don't sound the same)
The comparison is just stupid and what's even worse is the pointless bashing.

boo boo 06-05-2008 05:58 PM

I think Labrie has a pretty nice voice actually.

I just hate hate hate the way he sings.

aunixx 06-06-2008 02:51 PM

Pink Floyd for sure

dac 06-08-2008 10:19 AM

i despise metal and Time (PF) is my favorite song ever and there's really no comparison lyrically and vocally... The children yelling on Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2 have better voices than the guy from dream theater

Pink Floyd, no contest

BurnTham 06-09-2008 12:01 AM

I'm 19 and I'm gonna have to say Dream Theater. They got me interested in prog in the first place. A lot of Pink Floyd's music I find boring and pretentious because it seems to drag on and on. I realize DT has some incredibly drawn out solo sections but personally I'd rather hear Rudess and Petrucci showing off than ambient soundscapes. James Labrie's voice and the band's recent sell out trend aside, DT wins it for me.

Hart316x 06-11-2008 04:43 PM

OMG

Can't choose >_<

Ghostrider 06-11-2008 05:11 PM

There is no comparison here,,,Pink Floyd is one of the all time greatest bands period,,,their music remains unique even 30+ years after they recorded their masterpiece DSOTM. I do not discount DT and their musicianship, but get back to me in 30 years before you start comparing legends with relatively new bands no matter how talented they are.(Will anyone even know who DT is in 30 years?)

BurnTham 06-11-2008 08:29 PM

Well they're still kicking after 20+ years so I would like to hope so

Ghostrider 06-11-2008 09:05 PM

I like DT BurnTham, but PF is totally unique and simply exist in their own niche, and I don't think any of their albums will stand the test of time like DSOTM has,,,it's just unique in music history.

BurnTham 06-17-2008 09:37 PM

I agree with that then, hard to think of any albums with the same glory as DSOTM, pretty much the most recognizable album cover ever

lucifer_sam 06-29-2008 08:48 PM

Technical prowess doesn't assure good music. Otherwise, Buckethead would be good. I'm sorry, but I respect Petrucci as an excellent guitarist and Portnoy as an intense drummer but I simply can't listen to DT with the admiration as I have for Pink Floyd.

Oh oh, someone hasn't heard Population Overide.

Rainard Jalen 07-04-2008 05:59 AM

Pink Floyd are a trillion times superior to Dream Theatre. DT write some of the cheesiest, most goofy hard rock I've ever heard in my whole life.
