Frances The Mute or De-Loused In The Comatorium?

Im gunna have to go with De-Loused. It seems more progressive. But at the same time its soo hard because my two favourite songs are on Frances The Mute. Those Being L'Via L'Viaquez and Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus...anyways....your opinions and why.

Chicken And Waffuls 01-24-2006 08:39 PM

Laces Out Dan! 01-24-2006 08:55 PM

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 01-24-2006 09:45 PM

HAHAHA....that was funny...for a couple of seconds....

i think youre right...deloused would be my choice.

Shooting Star 01-25-2006 05:04 PM

I went with De-Loused. It just seems to have the band's eccentricities curbed by the producer (Rick Rubin) and more concise, while pushing the point more effectively and in an easier to listen to musical package. That and the semi-storyline of De-Loused is more comprehensible.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-25-2006 05:22 PM

Frances The Mute bored the pants off me.

Shooting Star 01-25-2006 05:25 PM

Yeah, that's what I was getting at... I was just a little more wordy about it eheh.

CombatBaby 01-25-2006 08:17 PM

ya id also say De-Loused

Vismund Cygnus 01-26-2006 05:11 AM

Frances the Mute is my personal favorite, Cassandra Geminni is one of my favorite songs ever.

boo boo 01-26-2006 05:53 AM

Love em both, but Frances. :)

Muzak Geek 01-26-2006 08:19 AM

Got to go with De-Loused on this one…

Jonny Sniper 01-26-2006 02:07 PM

de loused is my choice. i just prefer it and frances is good, but seing as its 5 tracks totalling 70 minutes, i sometimes found it hard to listen to. however i really like the beginning of miranda, that ghost isnt holy anymore.

soundgardenrox 01-26-2006 05:24 PM

i love them both, but....frances the mute for me.

Laces Out Dan! 01-26-2006 07:09 PM

3 of you people have said Frances but for some reason there is only one vote for it?

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 01-26-2006 07:13 PM

becuase they dont realize that its an actuall poll that they can vote on....

Laces Out Dan! 01-26-2006 07:14 PM

Oo haha FOOLS!

Don 01-26-2006 11:54 PM

Where's the - "Neither; The Mars Volta are one of the worst things to ever happen to prog rock and aren't even classified as prog due to their mainstream qualities and lack of any musical talent, despite so many people thinking they're cool for listening to them; thinking they're prog when all they play is boring experimental music" - option?
Do I just not vote? Oh, sorry...

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 01-27-2006 12:07 AM

thats a pretty bold statement. "lack of any musical talent"...i think many would beg to differ. care to back that up?

Do I have to back it up? Just put on one of their cds, then after that put on any random real prog album on (see top20album thread), and enjoy the laughs.

EDIT (I decided to answer him properly): If we compare it to actual good prog rock then:
Their songs don't go anywhere. The singing is terrible in general (see Thom Yorke/Russel Allen/James LaBrie for actual singers). Basically, nothing exciting happens in any of their songs. There's no layering, and if there is it's just annoying experimental crap. The chords and progressions are simple and predictable. There is not one talented band member from what we hear, i.e no real guitar solos/keyboard solos or complex time signatures/key changes. Not to mention the appalling lyrics which I feel I could have written when I was 12.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 01-27-2006 12:42 AM

again...i think that many (including myself) would still beg to differ with your opinion. but it is your opinion, and thats respectable. but thank you for explaining your statement.

Actually words like "boring" is obviously my opinion (it's a forum, you don't have to keep saying it's my opinion), but it's obviously not an opinion when I start to talk musically and don't use words like "crap"; it's fact.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 01-27-2006 12:52 AM

facts based on your opinions. im listening to them right now, and ive heard a few "solos", and i think their music progresses quite a bit more than you seem to think it does. their music doesnt have to "bear the definition of progressive" on its forehead. so, still what you stated was your opinion, and if fact at all....questionable fact.

Don 01-27-2006 12:56 AM

I didn't say there were no solos at all, I said they aren't musically impressive - even the least bit in comparison to good prog bands. And it's fact that they aren't labelled as prog/art rock anymore(by most music critics).

Laces Out Dan! 02-04-2006 12:17 AM

Id say they are as prog as ever...regardless of what they said about labels....and when it comes to being musically impressive just because they arent doing all kinds of virtuosos and arpeggios doesnt mean they arent musically impressive....They have great composition
And to add to that amazing lyrics

She's Lost Control 02-04-2006 12:30 PM

I like both, but De-Loused just that much more.

An Oscar Wilde quote and a Joy Division lyric as your user name. I'm sure I know you.
Edit: Never mind. I do know now.

But anyway who says Omar Rodriguez doesn't have musically impressive guitar solos? I'm uninformed to what musically impressive guitar solos are, not being a guitarist myself, but at the very least he's damn innovative.

And talk of them being prog? They seem to be encapsulate whatever it was I understood prog to be. What might your definition of progressive rock be then, Don?

Let's dissect a definition of progressive rock applying it to the Mars Volta. This definition came from allmusic.com, a fairly credible source:
"Prog-rock tends to be more traditionally melodic (even when multi-sectioned compositions replace normal song structures), more literary (poetry or sci-fi/fantasy novels), and more oriented toward classically trained instrumental technique"
Melodic: Check.
Multi-sectioned compositions: Check.
Literary: Based off their lyrics, and the name itself as an homage to science-fiction novels, check.
Oriented towards classically trained instrumental technique: You'd probably say otherwise but it's pretty opinion oriented and I'm inclined to hear echoes of classical in TMV.
Intrinsically album-based, taking advantage of the format's capacity for longer, more complex compositions and extended instrumental explorations. In fact, many prog bands were fond of crafting concept albums that made unified statements, usually telling an epic story or tackling a grand overarching theme: Check.

Laces Out Dan! 02-04-2006 03:06 PM

^ well said and i agree 100%

Laces Out Dan! 05-17-2006 05:56 PM

Well...Now i made this thread quiet a while ago...my preference has changed...i now prefer Frances The Mute more....And im Uber exited for the new album which should be out around June

Stone Magnet 05-17-2006 06:05 PM

I prefer Frances.

Frances 05-17-2006 10:58 PM

I prefer Frances but De-loused is a whole lot easier to swallow for someone who is not already a fan.

I know you're long gone, but i still can't help but laugh at your mind blowing stupidity and hypocrisy, we'll miss you Don. :(

Laces Out Dan! 05-21-2006 08:58 PM

MB is nothing without the ignorant stupidity of Don

Raine 05-21-2006 09:06 PM

De Loused.
I liked both records. But some of the songs on Frances the Mute, fell short of what i expected out of Frances.
De Loused all the way.
My favorite song on Frances the Mute was pobably the one about His Mother the Ghost or something like that.
I liked every song on Deloused in the Comatorium

Peace
