...sigh. I wish Mahavishnu Orchestra weren't as short-lived as John Maclaughlin made them to be. Birds of Fire and The Inner Mounting Flame sh*t over most other discographies.

I always thought the guitar was just slightly too far ahead in the mix on mounting flame. On many tracks, it concerns itself too much with being technically hard instead of good-sounding and is up in every other instruments face, making the overall sound slightly distractive.

I'm not saying I don't like it, though - everything but that is fine. I prefer Birds of Fire between the two, though.

Kansas bleh, they're one of those bands that really give prog a bad reputation.

It seems whenever people badmouth prog, Kansas is always one of the examples they use.

And when a third rate hick band that tried to dumb down the prog sound for the Lynyrd Skynyrd crowd is one of the bands people most associate with the genre, you know that's not a good thing.

American prog bands just suck, Dream Theater anybody? I know there's a few exceptions. But for the most part, stick with the brits.

Queen were somewhat of a cross between pop, glam and prog. But overall I wouldn't call them a prog band, even though they obviously had prog influences.

I really don't know what you're talking about. I've listened to most of what Mahavishnu Orchestra has produced and the lot of it doesn't scratch the surface of their debut. I like Birds of Fire, but admittedly it doesn't carry the same fervor all the way through as with the title track. The Inner Mounting Flame is what drove me to enjoy jazz fusion in the first place, and I personally feel it tops everything anyone else has done within the genre.
